Chen Xi couldn't help but shake his head and laugh when he saw Apocalypse walking down the street dressed like a complete fool. Yet, the ancient being's emergence still sent shockwaves through the entire mutant world.
Jean Grey jolted awake again from her uneasy sleep. She immediately tried to contact Chen Xi, but couldn't reach him. Left with no other option, she rushed to find Charles.
"Professor, did you feel it too? A powerful, ancient presence seems to have awakened."
Charles, looking equally astonished as Jean burst through the door, realized that she had sensed it as well.
After a brief moment of contemplation, he decided he needed to speak with that presence.
Unfortunately, it might turn out that he'd be the one getting lectured instead.
A dangerous thought indeed.
At this moment, Apocalypse had only just awakened and was still unfamiliar with how much the world had changed. Every step he took was filled with cautious wonder. The towering skyscrapers and glowing lights—he could hardly believe this was the same world he had once ruled.
What had happened to this Earth? Was this truly still his domain?
In the city's slums, Apocalypse slowly walked through the narrow alleys when he suddenly stopped. Ahead of him, several Sentinel robots were capturing mutants under the command of armed agents.
"Enough."
A low, commanding voice thundered across the street.
Draped in a long black robe that obscured his entire figure, Apocalypse appeared before them, exuding an ancient and oppressive aura.
The young mutant boy who had thought himself doomed stopped in his tracks, staring at the stranger in disbelief. The Sentinels immediately locked onto this new target—the very progenitor of mutantkind.
"Who are you? Here to die?" one of the agents sneered arrogantly.
This was a poorer district; radiation levels were low, and they could only afford a handful of Sentinels to hunt mutants.
But Apocalypse didn't respond to his question. His deep, resonant voice asked something else instead:
"Who rules this world?"
"…"
The agents, unable to understand his ancient tongue, mocked him rudely in return.
With a flick of his hand, grains of sand shimmered into existence—and in the blink of an eye, the men were gone, reduced to dust.
The young mutant was completely stunned.
The Sentinels instantly switched targets and unleashed their attacks—flames, frost, beams of energy—all at once. But against the monster-like figure before them, none of it mattered.
Apocalypse's eyes rolled white as he raised his hand casually. The towering machines disintegrated into dust, scattering like desert sand on the wind.
The boy was dumbfounded…
He couldn't believe there existed someone in this world as terrifyingly powerful as Chen Xi. Fearing this "monster" might cause more trouble, the boy hurriedly led him back to their mutant hideout.
Apocalypse followed silently, listening intently to the conversations of people on the streets. With his extraordinary abilities, he quickly absorbed the local language with ease.
Once back at the hideout, the boy dismissed the younger mutants and turned to him.
"I don't understand your language. Do you speak Egyptian? Arabic? Maybe English?"
Apocalypse ignored the question and instead stared intently at a large poster on the wall. "Who is he?"
Hearing him speak Egyptian, the boy sighed in relief.
Pointing at the poster, he said, "He's our greatest savior — the strongest hero among mutants. He taught us that we mutants are humanity's true future."
The poster bore none other than Chen Xi's face — the man who had proven to the world that the Sentinel robots weren't invincible, who had helped countless mutants living in the world's poorest slums.
Apocalypse's expression remained unreadable. Without a word, he walked to an old television and placed his hand upon it.
In an instant, countless streams of data surged into his mind.
Apocalypse was terrifying indeed — within mere seconds, he had absorbed the entirety of human history spanning thousands of years.
"So weak… and yet they rule this world? Humans, who once betrayed me? These false gods and leaders shall cease to exist!"
"I have returned!"
He looked around at the dilapidated shelter, fury boiling beneath his calm exterior. His children — mutants — were now forced to live in hiding and oppression.
He would shatter this decaying world. Those who had betrayed their god would once again kneel before him.
"Where did you come from?" the boy asked hesitantly, still unable to place this strange man who felt utterly out of time — like a relic from another age.
Apocalypse replied solemnly, "From an age when mankind had not yet lost its way."
The boy sighed, shrugging. "Well, welcome to the twenty-first century."
There was no saving this guy, was there?
"This new world," Apocalypse murmured, "must be purified."
"It does need cleansing," the boy admitted with a weary sigh. "But that's not something people like us can even think about. I just want to feed my brothers and sisters."
"How pitiful, my child. Why do you shackle your own potential?"
"What are you trying to do?"
"To make you stronger."
The moment his words fell, a surge of violet energy gathered at Apocalypse's fingertips, pouring into the boy's head. The young mutant screamed as his body underwent a rapid, agonizing transformation.
Within seconds, he could feel a surge of overwhelming power awaken inside him — like a sleeping giant roaring to life.
"This… this is me?"
He stared at his hands, trembling in disbelief. His eyes burned with newfound zeal. Was this man… a god?
Apocalypse smiled, finally satisfied. He patted the boy's shoulder approvingly.
His power of enhancement was one of his greatest tools — capable of fully unlocking a mutant's genetic potential. His blood itself could heal any mutant's wounds or diseases.
"From now on, you will be one of my Four Horsemen."
"Horsemen? That's such an old-fashioned name. Sounds like something from the Middle Ages."
"Trust me, my child. You will be proud to bear that title."
—
A dimly lit underground bar.
Apocalypse and the newly empowered youth, Ronat, entered together in search of Psylocke.
"Sorry, we're closed," said the bald bartender without even looking up from counting his cash.
"We're looking for the strongest mutant," Apocalypse said flatly.
At that moment, Psylocke emerged from the back room.
"Everything okay?" she asked.
"I'm fine, Psylocke," the bartender replied, waving her off. "I can handle this."
But Apocalypse wasn't here to waste time. "I need your help, child."
The bartender immediately pulled a revolver from his drawer and aimed it at Apocalypse. "So you're here to poach my people?"
In the next instant, Apocalypse flicked his wrist. The gun disintegrated into a handful of sand. The bartender froze, dumbstruck.
Seeing this, Psylocke's hand flared with violet light as she conjured a gleaming psychic blade, pressing it to Apocalypse's throat.
The air in the room went still.
"What do you want?" Psylocke demanded.
"I want you to feel the greatest power."
Apocalypse calmly turned his head toward her. Her psychic blade blazed even brighter in response.
Thus, Psylocke — one of the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse — was born.
Soon after, she led him to Angel, who also joined their ranks. Only one final member remained.
"I think I know who the last one will be," Apocalypse said.
At that moment, Chen Xi stepped out of the void.
"You… you're that man!"
Apocalypse's eyes widened in alarm. He couldn't sense any spatial fluctuations, nor any trace of mutant genes from Chen Xi's body.
For someone to evade his perception — that meant only one thing: this man's power was beyond imagination.
