Chapter 30: Fishing for Words to Seek the Forbidden Forest
Harry's blade was out; Hagrid's soul fled. "Harry! Don't!"
But the knife was swift, kissing the dragonlet's throat and drawing a line of blood.
"Come on, then!" Harry snarled. "Spit one more flame!"
All creatures avoid harm. Though newborn, the dragon felt the blade's cold and the man's killing aura. It sprawled flat, folded wings, and nearly wet itself.
Harry sneered and withdrew the blade.
Hagrid scooped the dragon and cooed. "Harry, he's just a child."
"Your kindness is misplaced. If you don't train away its wildness, one day it'll bite its master."
Every word was gold. Hagrid scratched his head. "All right… I thought you'd really kill Norbert."
The dragon, safe in Hagrid's arms, opened its mouth again—
Harry glared; it wilted.
"If Charlie knew you trained dragons like this, he'd talk your ear off," Ron said.
"How else do you train a beast?" Harry asked.
A beast?
Ron swallowed. Dragons were XXXXX beasts—and Harry called it livestock. No wonder he'd beaten the Dark Lord.
With Harry's presence, the dragon behaved. After they'd had their fill of petting, the trio left.
"Come often," Hagrid called. "I'll write you about Norbert's days."
"He's ready to be a mum," Hermione smiled.
"A tough one," Ron muttered. "Imagine how much a full-grown Norbert will eat—half the Forbidden Forest."
At "Forbidden Forest," Hermione gasped. "I've got it!"
"What?" Ron jumped.
"Think about it! We scoured the castle—but the castle is only part of Hogwarts!"
"You mean the Stone is in the Forbidden Forest?" Harry asked.
"Plenty of magical beasts there," Ron said. "No wonder that man cozied up to Hagrid. No one knows the Forest like him."
Hermione and Ron were excited. They wanted to search, but the Forest was deadly—many XXXXX creatures lurked. If they blundered in, they'd die.
"Let Hagrid lead," Ron said. "He knows safe and dangerous places."
"But we're looking for the Stone—we can't let Hagrid know," Hermione shook her head. "And it's too big to search."
Harry, seeing her confidence, asked, "Got a plan?"
Blushing at "Big Sis," she coughed. "We draw him out. Have him tell us where the beasts dwell.
"Then compare with the beasts he mentioned in the pub—we'll know where to go."
"Brilliant!" Harry clapped. "We'll do it your way."
Thus, whenever free, they visited Norbert—and over cups and chatter learned the Forest's paths and secrets. Hagrid, blunt and open, answered everything.
"Oh, Hagrid—are there three-headed dogs in the Forest?" Hermione asked, chin in hand. "You know beasts best."
Hagrid puffed up. "Just a bit better than others.
"No three-headed dogs in the Forest."
Hermione nodded and jotted on a parchment.
"Almost there," she whispered to the boys. "We can move."
"Tonight?" Ron was itching. "I'm ready."
They were eager; Harry worried. With a blade and skill, he could dance among dragon dens and fire pits—but could he grow extra arms to shield them?
He wanted to go alone, but they'd never agree. So he thought of hiring a guard.
His eyes fell on Norbert. The dragonlet, now Fang-sized, still remembered the man who'd cowed it; a look from Harry snuffed its fire.
Not a guard, then a guard-beast.
"How much does Norbert eat now?" he asked.
"Ten times what he did at birth—and growing," Hagrid sighed.
"Then let me take him," Harry said. "I've hit a bottleneck with my blade. I want to practice near the Forest.
"With Norbert to forage, he'll guard me too."
Hagrid knew Harry had slain a troll and fought well, but forest-edge trips broke rules. He hesitated. "You can't go—Forest or edge. It's against the rules."
"Ah, Brother—don't be so stiff. Don't play small."
Stung by the prod, and owing Harry for the dragon's reprieve, Hagrid relented. "If it's only the edge, maybe it's fine.
"But I must come with you."
Harry wanted a dragon to harden his edge; Hagrid cited rules. Only after a few goads and a claim of debt did he nod. What next? Wait and see.
