Chapter 38: The Seed
SERAPHINA
The whispers started the second I stepped into the hallway.
I should've gone back inside. Should've slammed the door and shoved something heavy against it and pretended I was still asleep. But I didn't. My feet just kept moving and I didn't know why and that scared me more than the whispers did.
Come... find us...
Okay. Okay, so I was hearing voices. That was fine. Totally normal. People heard voices all the time in this hellhole, right? From the torture. From whatever shit Draven pumped into the air down in those dungeons.
Except I knew that wasn't it.
The hallway stretched out in front of me and it was so quiet I could hear my own heartbeat. No screaming from below. No chains. No whips. Nothing. When was this place ever quiet? Never. It was never quiet.
I wrapped my arms around myself because the cold was biting into my skin through this thin-ass dress and I was shaking. From cold or fear, I couldn't tell. Maybe both. Probably both.
