A faint bitterness rose in Emma's heart. If Alex's mother hadn't come, she might never have known how much he had quietly done for her.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Alex raised a brow, his voice calm and gentle.
"Is it worth mentioning? I didn't think it was anything. You're the one I wanted to see, that's all."
"Did my mother say something that upset you earlier? If she did, I apologize on her behalf. But her opinions don't represent mine. The reason I refused to work for my family's company and started my own business was so that I could make my own choices—especially in marriage—without being controlled by anyone."
Emma hesitated.
"Alex, you've been preparing for your marriage that far ahead of time?"
His company was founded five years ago, shortly after he returned from studying abroad.
So back then… who was the woman he wanted to marry?
He caught the expression on her face, his lips curving slightly. Reaching out, he gently ruffled her hair.
