On our way out, Mrs. Kline mentioned something about Alex leaving a black card for me "for emergencies." I didn't ask questions I just took it. If he wanted control, fine. I'd use his money to buy myself some freedom, even if it was just temporary.
We went everywhere. A café downtown where the coffee was too sweet. A bookshop that smelled like dust . Then a boutique, glossy and over-decorated, full of mirrors and overpriced clothes. I wasn't there to shop I was there to remind myself that I could still breath and I wasn't stuck int that house.
Still, when Milo's attention drifted, I slipped on a red dress that hugged a little too close and made me feel like someone else. Someone alive.
He didn't comment, just gave me that look the quiet, judging one that said he thought this was pointless.
I ignored him of course.
