38 A Day to Remember
Hans was a technician at the AdlerTech Chip Factory. He had just turned 50 this year and had been working at the facility since its inception thirteen years ago. At fifty, he had reached the age of knowing his destiny. Now, the chip factory was facing bankruptcy, and the previous owner had sold the company to a young man in his twenties. He heard that the man, Matthias Engel, used to work in gaming.
Should he resign? At fifty, where would he go in Germany if he resigned? Hans shook his head; he would wait and see. He didn't know what this young man could bring, hoping he could hold on for another year or two.
"Hans, what's the factory's current operating status?" Matthias asked.
Hans looked troubled: "It's not optimistic. We only have one customer left. If that company also stops buying our chips, then we'll have no sales at all."
Matthias nodded: "Ask them how much more stock they need, and send it all to them at once, at half price."
"What?!" Hans was stunned: "That's not right. If we sell at half price, we won't make any profit."
"It's fine. Clear out all the inventory. These chips will stop being produced from now on."
"Ah!?!"
Several veteran employees were dumbfounded, not understanding the new boss's intentions. They all thought the new boss was crazy—perhaps some rich heir out to enjoy life. For Matthias, these chips were too old. Selling them wouldn't make much money, and they would occupy time, manpower, and machines to maintain. He wanted to shift the production line to manufacturing new equipment. Cutting the Gordian knot was sometimes the best way to solve a problem.
"We are going to make a new type of chip next, so we can't waste time on old chips. I hope everyone can understand my idea."
As soon as he said this, Hans understood and no longer dwelled on the issue of old chips. At this moment, Matthias took out a design drawing.
"Take a look, can this machine be made?"
Matthias took out the design drawing for a "Liquid Droplet" manufacturing machine. Hans and the others took the design drawing and observed it carefully.
"The machine tool can be made. There might be a few types of metal that the factory doesn't have, which will need to be purchased."
"You don't need to worry about that. I will have someone specially procure them."
Immediately after, Matthias took out the design drawing for a chip silicon wafer base: "How about this?"
Hans smiled after seeing the design drawing: "This is what we do. The silicon wafer base is no problem at all."
"Very good. Combine them, and that's the chip we're going to make."
As soon as he said this, the others were once again dumbfounded.
"Herr Engel, Boss Matthias, you're not joking with us, are you?"
"I'm not joking."
Hans paced back and forth, thinking it over. He had never seen this method of chip manufacturing in his life.
"Boss Matthias, you mean, this 'liquid droplet' above can perform all the calculations of an integrated circuit?"
"Exactly. Through software control, its particles are arranged and combined, achieving the same effect as an integrated circuit, with integrated graphics, CPU, and memory."
"This... this can't be possible."
Hans looked at the design drawing in his hand, his brows furrowed. Having made chips his entire life in the German tech sector, this was the first time he had heard of such technology; it was truly too advanced.
"We can try to make one chip first, and then we'll know when we test it. Also, here are the design drawings for a small motherboard. You can take a look at those too."
The others received the motherboard design drawings and were once again puzzled. This motherboard was smaller than a mobile phone. Where would this motherboard be installed?
"Boss Matthias, is our motherboard for computers?"
"For game consoles."
"Game consoles!?!"
The others were once again dumbfounded. They felt the sky was falling, thinking that Matthias had gone crazy, that he must have had an unscientific dream last night and was now planning to make it a reality.
Matthias: "Yes, game consoles. I saw that the factory building next door was also idle, so I bought it. In the future, next door will be our game console company headquarters, and we will provide manufacturing of motherboards, chips, and other items for this game company."
After the meeting ended, Hans and several old employees sat together discussing.
"Hans, this is too unreliable. This is the first time I've heard of such a chip!"
"Alas, this technology is unheard of. I don't know what the young man is thinking."
"Don't worry about it so much. At least he paid our salaries as soon as he came in. Let's just try it. Maybe this chip can run successfully."
"Alright, let's try it first. Let's use the machine to make a 'droplet' manufacturing instrument. The metals and other components will arrive in a couple of days. Let's get busy for now."
Several old employees felt that it might be unreliable, but resistance was meaningless. The old ways were no longer viable, so they could only seek new directions for development.
Matthias also bought the factory building next door. He transformed it into the headquarters of GAME STAR Future Gaming Equipment Company. He began to pave the way for subsequent game console assembly, promotion, and sales. This made Matthias's life even busier. Every morning, he would go to the factory, deal with factory matters, and then return to his apartment to organize and fix game feedback via the Game Producer System. His busy life made Matthias feel very fulfilled.
"Matthias, why are you going out again?" Maria Schmidt was very puzzled. He had been going out too frequently recently, a stark contrast to his previous homebody image.
"To the factory in the suburbs. There are too many things to do."
"Oh? You finally found a job! Why did you choose the suburbs? Anyway, I'm very happy that you can take the first step and are finally not cooped up at home."
Matthias sighed and didn't explain much: "How is Laura doing?"
"She has two more scenes to shoot before she wraps up her part in the project."
"Oh, I see. Then I wish her a happy wrap-up in advance!"
After saying this, Matthias drove away again. Maria stood by the window, watching the car drive away: "That's good. I really hope he can forget the shadow of resigning from GG Games, and also, that woman."
Matthias arrived at the AdlerTech factory again. Several workers were making an instrument. All the purchased components were complete, and it had entered the final assembly process. A few hours later, the first "droplet" manufacturing machine was born.
Everyone gathered around the machine, unable to see anything unusual about it. Matthias caressed the machine: "Perhaps, this event will be recorded in history textbooks. Come on, let's take a group photo in front of the machine!"
Several employees who made the instrument, along with Matthias, stood in front of the instrument, smiling, and took a photo that would shock the future scientific community. Immediately after, Hans activated the instrument switch. Several special liquids stirred and combined in the instrument, heated, stimulated by electric current, and after several processes, a drop of liquid metal droplet successfully appeared.
