I watch as Mirella's expression changes from anger to almost pity. "Rex…" she calls out, he reluctantly turns toward her, and the look in his eyes is raw. It's full of pain and old memories.
"You think I have forgotten?" he shouts, his voice breaking a little. "You think I don't remember how she looked? What she has become? How did she had scream when the bond rejected her?"
Mirella stays quiet, she only stare at him.
Rex carries on, voice shaking with fury and grief mixed together. "You didn't see it, Mirella. So don't act like you understand, because you didn't watch the light leave her eyes. You didn't bury her."
"That was different." She sighs.
"No," he growls. "It wasn't."
"She wasn't your true mate, Rex. You know that…the bond wasn't that …"
"It shouldn't matter!" he snarls. "I loved her."
The room falls silent, my heart falls into my stomach. My throat becomes dry, I don't know why it hurts. I don't know why the word love cuts so deep.
