Chapter 34: Minion Island
North Blue - Minion Island
The lead-gray sky hung low, like a collapsing pot. Snow-covered ruins and wrecked ships formed the desolate backdrop for the battlefield.
The wind carried a bone-chilling cold, laced with the metallic smell of rust and blood.
The 5,000,000,000 Beri Op-Op Fruit was about to unleash a bloodbath on this island.
On the island cliffs.
Doflamingo stood high above, his sunglasses glinting with greed and cruelty.
"Fufufufufu... The 'Perennial Youth Operation'... it's finally within my grasp."
His giant pink feather coat was a garish splash of color against the snow. Behind him, his top officers—Trebol, Pica, and Diamante—stood ready.
Trebol snickered. "Nee, nee, Doffy, the Marines have landed. But it doesn't matter, our men are already mixed in with them."
Doflamingo slowly raised a hand. "Then let's let them watch their hope turn to despair."
At the ruined docks, three Marine warships were anchored.
"Fleet Admiral Sengoku's orders are clear! We must secure the Op-Op Fruit!" a Vice Admiral shouted, his hand on his sword. The air was thick with tension. The Marines had no idea that a Donquixote Family spy was already in their ranks.
Deep in an island warehouse, Diez Barrels' voice was low and greedy. "The World Government's demand is that the fruit not fall into pirate hands."
Another man in the shadows licked his lips. "Doflamingo's ship is already in the North Blue... You really think the Marines can stop him?"
In the snow, a pair of black boots crunched through the drifts.
It was Rosinante, who had arrived early. The "Corazon" (Heart) of the Donquixote Family.
Smoke was still curling from the barrel of his pistol. Several guards lay unconscious at the door.
"Law, stay close!"
He looked back at the small, frail boy wrapped in a blanket, the white patches of Amber Lead Syndrome spreading across his face.
"Cora-san... where are we going?"
Rosinante's eyes were full of resolve. "We're going to steal something that can save your life."
The North Blue wind whipped the snow. Rosinante pulled his hat low, his black coat blending with the night.
He took a deep breath, and the power of his Calm-Calm Fruit activated, swallowing all sound.
Diez Barrels' pirates were inside. The metal case containing the Op-Op Fruit was on a central table.
Rosinante lit a Molotov cocktail and rolled it into a corner.
BOOM! Fire erupted. The pirates yelled, "Fire! Put it out!"
But their shouts were completely silenced by his ability. In the chaos, Rosinante slipped in like a ghost and grabbed the cold metal case.
Got it!
He turned to leave, but his foot hit a patch of oil—BAM! He fell hard, and the case flew from his hands, clattering loudly.
"Who's there?!" The pirates spun, guns and swords aimed right at him.
"Tch...!" Rosinante gritted his teeth, rolling to dodge the first volley and firing back. A cutlass slashed down, catching him across the back as he dodged.
"Damn it...!" He grabbed the fruit and crashed through the window into the blizzard.
The blizzard swallowed the island. Rosinante stumbled into an abandoned lighthouse, leaving a bright red streak on the wall.
"Cora-san!" Law ran to him, trying to stop the bleeding.
Rosinante smiled, his face pale as the snow. He trembling pulled the strange, heart-shaped fruit from his coat and shoved it at Law. "Quick, eat it..."
Law stared at the fruit, his breathing pained. "Cora-san... what..."
"No more talk!" Rosinante coughed, blood trickling from his mouth. "Do you want to die?!"
Law gritted his teeth and bit down. A strange power exploded inside him.
"What is this...?" Law stared at his hands.
Rosinante smiled weakly. "Now... you're free..."
"Take this..." Rosinante pulled a blood-stained intelligence file from his coat. "Go to the Marine outpost... Give this... directly to Sengoku..."
Law clutched the file, his tears freezing as they hit the snow. "Cora-san...!"
But when he burst through the door of the Marine outpost, the man who greeted him wasn't an officer. It was Vergo—Doflamingo's spy in the G-5 Base.
"What is it, kid?" Vergo asked, his tall shadow falling over Law.
"This... Cora-san told me to give this to the Marines..."
Vergo took the file. When he saw the contents—the Donquixote Family's troop deployment and the Marine spy's mission orders—his pupils contracted.
The signature was "Sembei." (Rice Cracker)
"Heh..." A cold smile spread across Vergo's face. "I see..."
When Law returned to the lighthouse with Vergo, Rosinante's heart stopped.
"This is a surprise, Corazon," Vergo's voice was ice. "Ten years, and I never realized you were a talking spy."
Rosinante's throat tightened, but he kept his goofy smile on. "Mr. Vergo... what are you talking about?"
"Playing dumb?" Vergo slammed his fist into Rosinante's stomach, sending him flying. Rosinante crashed through a wooden crate, coughing up blood.
Vergo grabbed him by the collar. "The Marines' 'Sembei'... how ironic."
Vergo's Haki-coated fist fell again. "I wonder what Doffy's face will be when he finds out his own brother is a Marine?"
Rosinante coughed up more blood, but he smiled. "Heh... he already knows..."
Vergo froze, just as Law's roar came from behind him—"Let Cora-san go!!!"
A pale blue sphere instantly expanded: "ROOM."
Vergo spun, but Law's palm was aimed at him. "Shambles!"
FWOOSH!
Vergo was instantly teleported outside the lighthouse. Law grabbed Rosinante.
"Go... run..." Rosinante gasped.
Law gritted his teeth, put Cora-san on his back, and ran into the blizzard.
Law stumbled through the snow, carrying Rosinante.
"Law..." Rosinante's voice was weak. "I'm sorry... I got you mixed up in this..."
Law's tears froze. "Shut up! You promised! You promised you'd take me to the sea...!"
Rosinante smiled, his bloody hand patting Law's shoulder. "Yeah... I still haven't done that, have I..."
In the distance, the Donquixote Family's Jolly Roger snapped in the wind, a declaration that this betrayal was far from over.
