A head so smooth you could use it as a mirror; a face you could sketch in under thirty seconds; a supermarket bag in hand—yep, Saitama.
Lin Mo was genuinely surprised. He hadn't expected to run into the Bald Demon King while out for groceries.
He stepped up to greet him. "Uh… hello…" He was a bit awkward. As far as Saitama knew, they were strangers.
"Hm?" Saitama turned, a little puzzled. "And you are? A salesman? I'm not buying a gym membership."
"No, no sales!" Lin Mo waved both hands. "You might not know me, but I know you, Mr. Saitama!"
"Oh?" His brows twitched slightly—mildly surprised someone could name him.
"I'm a fan of yours!" Lin Mo decided to butter him up first.
"You've saved me a bunch of times! Remember that huge purple monster you one-punched in City M?"
"I was right down the street. Scared me half to death. Thanks for saving me! Strictly speaking, I'm your number-one fan!"
Saitama only reacted at "fan." As for "Vaccine Man"? One punch, no memory at all…
"Ah, a fan!" He brightened visibly. He had a fan!
Seeing that, Lin Mo thought, Got him, and pressed the advantage: "Mr. Saitama, I've been wanting to thank you."
"Meeting you here is perfect timing! How about… hotpot? I just saw a grand-opening sale over there—top-grade wagyū!"
"Top-grade… wagyū?"
Saitama switched to serious mode in an instant.
"Well… since it's a fan's kind offer… I've got veggies and mushrooms at home. Let's eat there."
He was suddenly enthusiastic—top-grade wagyū! He usually bought discounted beef rolls from the supermarket. A chance to eat the real thing!
"No time like the present. Let's go," Saitama said, eyes gleaming.
"Of course. Oh, and I've got snacks—let's bring them along."
Teacher Saitama really is straightforward… Lin Mo was just as excited. Yes—built-in safety!
The street should have been lively, but it was oddly empty, save for a giant screen playing the news.
"What's behind the surge in mosquitoes this year? We have Professor Kaffitchi, author of several books on the subject, to explain."
The feed cut to a bespectacled middle-aged man. "Hello, to go straight to the conclusion—this year's mosquitoes are a new species beyond my current research scope, so I don't really know the cause."
The audience grumbled. Someone shouted, "Then get off!"
Professor Kaffitchi only gave an awkward smile, pushed up his glasses, and said helplessly, "My apologies."
Before the apology faded, the screen switched to a breaking news bulletin—
"Breaking—swarms of mosquitoes are converging on City Z. Livestock bitten have been reduced to husks. Residents are advised to stay indoors…"
With a sound of shattering glass, a group of men came out of a convenience store.
"Boss, did you hear what the TV said? Total fearmongering."
A scrawny man fawned on the burly leader. "How could mosquitoes kill anyone? Cowards, the lot of them. Hilarious."
The crowd laughed. The big man hawked a glob on the ground, sneering, "Even better. Without these cowards around, we reap more."
He kicked a mountain of loot nearby, the impact dull and heavy.
Their laughter died as a bone-deep "bzzzz" swelled from afar, blanketing the street in seconds.
"Bzzzz—"
They didn't even have time to react before a black cloud of mosquitoes, like a living storm, swept in from every direction and engulfed them.
The screams lasted only seconds—and cut off.
When the swarm lifted, only a few bloodless husks remained.
After feeding, countless mosquitoes, as if receiving an order, converged toward a central point.
At the center of the black vortex formed by mosquitoes, a sultry figure came into focus—the Mosquito Girl.
"Incineration Cannon!"
She dodged by a hair. On a rooftop not far away stood a cyborg.
Cold light flickered in his golden mechanical eyes. Smoke curled from the cannon at his right arm. He stared without a hint of emotion, like a hunter-machine.
Meanwhile, on the other side of City Z, Lin Mo and Saitama were carrying armfuls of groceries home.
But the empty street felt… off.
"So many mosquitoes lately. Bzz bzz all night—can't sleep," Saitama groused. It had clearly been bothering him for a while.
Mosquitoes… annoying… Wait!
"Yikes." Lin Mo sucked in a breath. This was the Mosquito Girl arc. Where was Genos? Had the fight started?
No—Saitama's here with me! Not good—Genos in danger!
His face changed at once. He grabbed Saitama and sprinted toward the gathering swarm.
Genos once had a happy family. At fifteen, a rogue robot razed his city and killed his parents.
As he neared death, Dr. Kuseno found and saved him, remaking him into a cyborg at Genos's request. Now he lived for revenge.
His battle with Mosquito Girl was underway. He'd lost an arm; she'd lost both legs.
"Humans hiding indoors—that's true," Mosquito Girl taunted, voice sharp and mocking.
"But you forgot something… this city has countless other living things besides humans!"
She flung her arms wide and shrieked.
Instantly, every mosquito in City Z swarmed madly toward her, forming a massive twister of insects.
