Quickening his pace, Aos Qin took just over five minutes to walk through most of the street where the marketplace was located. Seeing that there were no more stalls around him, he took two more steps forward, turned past the corner where a house that seemed to have been vacant for quite some time stood, and he would reach another street.
That area was no longer within the market district; anyone setting up a stall there would be caught and fined by the city lord's guards. Therefore, everyone around was either entering or leaving the market, hurrying along without the leisure to pay attention to anything else.
Originally, Aos Qin should have been the same, but a faint sound coming from nearby made him stop. The sound seemed to come from within the courtyard wall of that house.
It was nothing unusual to hear a sound, but after listening carefully, Aos Qin realized it was a baby's crying — weak, intermittent, and nearly fading away. Considering that the house appeared abandoned, Aos Qin felt he couldn't just walk away.
Tucking the belt he carried inside his clothes, Aos Qin walked toward the courtyard gate. As expected, it was only half-closed, and a hole gaped near the bottom. Squatting down, he could see grass up to his calves growing wildly inside the courtyard.
"Looks like it really is an uninhabited place. Even if someone does live here, it doesn't matter — I'm just a kid. I'll just say I thought it was an abandoned yard and came in to play."
Thinking so, Aos Qin no longer hesitated, pushed open the half-closed gate, and stepped inside. Standing at the entrance, he glanced around — no sign of anyone. Without further concern, he moved along the wall to the right, where the sound was coming from.
After only a few steps, Aos Qin noticed that the grass ahead was moving, and that weak crying sound rang out again. While quickening his steps, he also circulated his Soul Power throughout his body — caution was still necessary.
Pushing aside the tall grass blocking his view, Aos Qin let out a small sigh of relief. The scene before him was not an abandoned baby as he had imagined, but it was still a pitiful sight. The source of the sound was a tiny, not-yet-eyed-opened puppy. Beside it were three others — all already lifeless.
Looking around at the thick grass and recalling the hole at the gate, Aos Qin understood — this must have been the spot the mother dog chose to give birth, but for some reason, she hadn't returned for a long time.
Gazing at the little creature whose voice was already hoarse, Aos Qin sighed softly. Its mother had likely met some misfortune and could no longer come back. Without anyone to care for it, this puppy probably wouldn't survive the night, just like its siblings lying on the ground.
"Seems you're lucky. I'll take you home."Truthfully, Aos Qin had always liked dogs but never had the conditions to raise one. Meeting this puppy now might be a bit of luck for him too.
Squatting down, he slowly infused Soul Power into the puppy's body — partly to strengthen its life force, partly to check its physical condition. Fortunately, the little thing was merely cold and starving, its strength nearly exhausted. With the help of Soul Power, its trembling body gradually stopped shaking.
Digging a small pit in the ground, Aos Qin buried the lifeless pups, then hurried home carrying the survivor in his arms."Come to think of it, I remember seeing a cultivation technique for beasts on the Soul Power Cultivation shelf of the Omnipotent Library."
This time, Aos Qin didn't encounter anything that made him stop again. Even moving as fast as he could, it still took him twenty minutes to reach home — showing just how large Soto City really was.
As soon as he entered, he found Oscar had already returned from the blacksmith shop. Without hesitation, Aos Qin instructed him to manifest two large sausages and grind them together with his own hamburger into minced meat, then boil some rice soup and mix them after cooling.
Seeing the puppy in his brother's arms, Oscar immediately understood what had happened. Taking the hamburger Aos Qin handed him, he went off to work.
Aos Qin wasn't idle either — he needed to boil hot water to wash the puppy; otherwise, the filth on its body might prove fatal. He first brought it to the forge, where the fire had only just gone out — the room was still warm.
He surrounded the little creature with iron ingots to keep it from crawling into danger, then went to the kitchen to heat water. While waiting, he filled half a wooden basin with cool water, found two unused towels, and made preparations.
Since it would take a while for the water to boil, Aos Qin went to the yard and split two thigh-thick logs, planning to cut one large and four small planks to make a doghouse later.
Before the planks were done, the water was boiling and Oscar's rice soup was ready. The brothers went together to the forge to wash the puppy, relighting the furnace to keep it from catching cold. It took three full washes before the water finally ran clear.
"How filthy can you be… Luckily I boiled enough water," Aos Qin couldn't help but complain inwardly.
After drying the puppy, they didn't dare take it outside. Oscar went to fetch the prepared food, while the starving puppy, lured by the smell, devoured the small bowl of rice-soup meat paste in no time. Normally, such a young pup shouldn't eat meat, but since this was food condensed with Soul Power and had restorative effects, it should be fine.
With its belly full, the little creature finally calmed down. Aos Qin kept the remaining food warm on the stove to feed it later.
The puppy's fur was short and mostly white, with five yellow circular spots forming a ring on its back — remarkably cute."I'll call you Cohen," Aos Qin said. The two brothers unilaterally decided the name for the small furball curled up in a heap.
Glancing at each other's filthy clothes, both brothers gave disgusted looks and went to wash up. Oscar hand-washed his clothes, while Aos Qin tossed his into a basin, using Soul Power to simulate a washing machine's spin. As he lazily worked, he thought about when he could finally build a Soul Guidance Device washing machine.
"Ah, forget it. Don't think about it now — so many Soul Guidance Devices to make, and I still have to cultivate.
Speaking of which, the success rate for crafting a Storage Soul Guidance Device using Spirit-Forged Empty Nether Iron as the core in the Omnipotent Library has already reached 100%. I can start making it tomorrow. Pity it only has three cubic meters of space. I wonder how much it'll sell for… If it's less than 150 Gold Soul Coins, I'll just make two for personal use and sell one to recover costs. Then I'll mainly produce jungle-blade-type Soul Guidance Devices — they're easier and cheaper to make.
Once my Soul Power level reaches fifteen, I'll start producing grade-two Storage Soul Guidance Devices for sale."Aos Qin forcibly stopped his thoughts from wandering further.
Back in his room, Aos Qin saw the luxurious Storage Belt lying on his bed and instantly groaned inwardly,"Ahh… I still need to buy Mithril to repair this thing! Mithril costs a hundred Gold Soul Coins per kilogram… I'm so broke."
Thinking that, a ridiculous idea popped into his mind:"What if Oscar and I went to the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect and sold ourselves? That'd solve all our money problems."He quickly shook his head to chase away the dangerous thought.
"Aos Qin, you've got a cheat ability! Have some ambition! There'll definitely be bread, and milk too. Yes, that's right — keep going!"
Watching his younger brother's shifting expression, Oscar resisted the urge to use mental communication."Sigh, this brother of mine is great in every way, except that sometimes he just… drifts into his own world. Really worrying."
After cleaning up, the brothers began making Cohen's doghouse. They wrapped a wooden box completely with the cotton coats they'd worn as children — a simple kennel was done.
Checking on Cohen in the forge, they found him still asleep. Gently placing him into the new nest, Aos Qin noted the time — almost time to help Aubert and Yun Shuangshuang with their stall. Once the evening rush was over, the whole family could finally go home and have dinner together.
