Chapter 21 - Ma Hongjun

In the early morning, two small electric scooters sped lightly along the road outside Soto City. The singing coming from the scooters showed that the riders were in a very good mood. Beside the two scooters, a short-haired big white dog with yellow round spots on its back was also running.

This familiar two-person-one-dog team was none other than the brothers Oscar and Aos Qin, who had just finished their autumn break, along with Cohen, who had already advanced into a hundred-year Soul Beast.

During the recent autumn vacation, not only did Oscar and Aos Qin successfully achieve their goal of breaking through to level twenty in Soul Power, they also cooperated to produce two very interesting Soul Guidance Devices.

Right now, these two Soul Guidance Devices were stored inside the backpack-type Storage Soul Guidance Device forged using Empty Nether Iron as the core formation, on the backs of the two of them, ready to be tested at the academy.

The story goes like this: after the holiday started, Aos Qin estimated his Soul Power improvement speed and found that, barring any accidents, completing his set goal would not be a problem at all. So he began preparing for the next stage, designing the next phase of his Soul Guidance Armor.

During the design process, Aos Qin's plan was to create a pair of double-arm Soul Guidance Armor that could connect the gauntlets and chest armor. He would install Soul Guidance Devices capable of providing long-range coverage fire on these arm-guards, to increase his fire coverage range and enhance fire suppression.

While searching within the Omnipotent Library for suitable weapon information, he unexpectedly came across a blueprint for a Gauss Sniper Rifle.

The moment he saw that design drawing, it was as if a bolt of lightning flashed through Aos Qin's mind. He realized that when he was modifying the weapons from his previous life, he had fallen into a kind of misconception — he had always been focused only on traditional gunpowder weapons, subconsciously ignoring those conceptual energy weapons.

Cursing quietly, "Experience-based thinking really harms a person," Aos Qin shifted his attention to these energy weapons. After all, this was the Douluo Continent — the properties of materials here were far beyond those of his previous life, and many Soul Guidance Devices were essentially weapons that used Soul Power as an energy-attack method.

With that premise, Aos Qin was delighted to discover that high-power weapons like Gauss sniper rifles, electromagnetic cannons, railguns, and plasma weapons were completely feasible to make — and laser weapons basically corresponded to Soul-beam-type Soul Guidance Devices.

One could say that, at this stage, making such energy weapons was actually easier than modifying gunpowder weapons, since most modified firearms ended up being fixed-mounted Soul Guidance Devices that relied on consuming large amounts of expensive bullets or shells to deal damage.

After repeatedly comparing the difficulty of manufacturing these energy weapons, Aos Qin set his sights on the simplest in principle — and one whose size could be appropriately enlarged to reduce production difficulty — the electromagnetic cannon.

From the perspective of operation, electromagnetic cannons still required ammunition, so they should be classified as fixed-mounted Soul Guidance Devices.

However, examining the working principle carefully, it wasn't hard to see that the reason electromagnetic cannons possessed terrifying destructive power was because strong Ampere forces generated inside the barrel via electromagnetic effects accelerated pure-metal shells. After exiting the barrel, the shells had terrifying kinetic impact that could shred everything, with far greater range than traditional gunpowder weapons.

Simply put, the barrel determined the power of the electromagnetic cannon; as for shells, they just needed to be pure metal.

Thus, an electromagnetic cannon wasn't a conventional fixed-mount Soul Guidance Device dependent on ammunition. When using an electromagnetic cannon, one didn't need to worry too much about ammunition consumption.

As long as you could fabricate a firing device — the barrel — that wasn't too large, could provide enough kinetic energy to the shell, and could be reused, the electromagnetic cannon would be considered complete.

Because the blueprint provided by the Omnipotent Library was within Aos Qin's current manufacturing capabilities, he pulled his brother Oscar along to start forging the barrel.

With the help of large amounts of rare metal, the creation of the barrel proceeded quite smoothly. With that, Aos Qin also spent some effort on shell making.

He carved simple formations on the shells — an energy-gathering formation and an acceleration formation to allow them to continue accelerating for a period after exiting the barrel, plus an explosive formation that detonated two seconds after encountering resistance — making the electromagnetic cannon's power even greater.

In the end, the finished product created by Oscar and Aos Qin was like this: a three-meter-long barrel, the front half mounted on a tripod, the rear half wrapped inside a thick base one meter wide, one and a half meters long, and one meter tall.

In summary, this electromagnetic cannon was four and a half meters long, one and a half meters at its highest point, and could normally be split into three parts — the stand, the base, and the barrel. Besides serving as support, the base was also a large Milk Bottle Soul Guidance Device, because firing even one shot would basically drain all Soul Power from a single-ring Soul Master.

Normally, the three components needed to be assembled when using the electromagnetic cannon — but if the user had enough Soul Power and could withstand carrying a three-meter-long barrel, they could even shoulder-fire it like a huge RPG.

Right now, this weapon of mass destruction was stored in the secondary-grade Storage Soul Guidance backpack on Oscar's back, specially made with Empty Nether Iron and containing ten cubic meters of space.

After all, this thing was simply too large; if placed in their regular Storage Soul Guidance Device, it would take up half the space — not suitable.

The electromagnetic cannon was the first large Soul Guidance Device the brothers made during vacation; the second one was in the backpack behind Aos Qin, created in the week before school resumed.

At that time, after the two brothers broke through the level-20 bottleneck, they were preparing for their trip to Star Dou Forest. To make himself more comfortable there, Aos Qin searched for more information — and actually found something great:

A method to create Foam Metal. Although called metal, foam metal was actually a special Soul Guidance Device.

Usually, foam metal stayed compact, looking like ordinary metal, but after Soul Power was injected, it would expand and form a predetermined structure. Typically, one cubic meter of foam metal could expand into a ten-cubic-meter space.

Of course, foam metal was not a Storage Soul Guidance Device — the expanded space only existed while expanded. Once shrunk, the space disappeared, so external objects couldn't be stored inside if one wanted to keep the shrink-and-expand function.

At this point, everyone should understand — this was basically a portable camping house! Tables, chairs, stools, even a bed could be preset to form when the metal expanded.

Other things could be stored in the Storage Soul Guidance Device — put them into the "house" when opened, take them out when folded. For a night or two outdoors, not many things were needed.

Aos Qin made himself a foam metal piece that shrank to three cubic meters, but once expanded, formed a T-shaped elevated cabin one and a half meters above the ground.

The short end of the T had two sections — the front half was a small rest room where one could cook simple food. As long as the matching detection Soul Guidance Device was prepared in advance, the night-watcher could stay inside and view the surroundings via a display screen connected to detection Soul Guidance Devices placed around the perimeter.

The rear half of the short end was a small bathroom and toilet. With a Soul-powered heater installed and enough water, one could take a hot bath.

The long end of the T resembled a soft sleeper train cabin — a narrow corridor and three small bedrooms with doors. Each small room had two bunk beds and could house four people, for a total of three rooms.

With this thing, at least they would rest well during the Star Dou Forest trip. However, Aos Qin had not yet finished the supporting components.

The missing parts were the triggered defensive Soul Guidance Devices to be mounted outside the cabin and the detection Soul Guidance Devices to be placed around it.

For these two components, Aos Qin planned to ask Teacher Shao Xin for help, making at least grade-four Soul Guidance Devices. Then he would obtain a fully-charged grade-seven Milk Bottle Soul Guidance Device from the teacher to install inside the cabin as energy — perfect.

With such a relaxed mindset, the two people and one dog returned to Shrek Academy, which they had been away from for six weeks, twenty minutes later — at 6:30 in the morning.

Since it was still early, the teachers were all busy inside their rooms, so they didn't encounter anyone. Oscar and Aos Qin arrived at their dorm area and stopped.

Next to their own dorm, the wooden dorm that was still dilapidated before vacation had obviously been repaired. It wasn't exactly good, but at least now livable.

Most importantly, both the Soul Power fluctuations in the air and Cohen's constantly twitching nose confirmed that someone was already living there.

Their mental link instantly activated —

"Did the academy actually recruit a new student? We finally have a classmate?"

That was their first reaction after their moment of pause. Their second reaction:

"This Soul Power fluctuation seems to be from a Soul Scholar below level ten… meaning the dean is still earning fees from helping awaken Martial Souls!"

After Ao Qin cut off the mental link, he suddenly realized that this new student should be the chubby Ma Hongjun who possessed the Evil Fire Phoenix Martial Soul.

Because he had been in this world for a long time, some memories had faded, so he didn't react immediately — which was good, otherwise Oscar would have noticed through the link.

Since the person was meditating, Oscar and Aos Qin did not go disturb him. Anyway, they were in the same academy — they would meet in class.

However, Oscar and Aos Qin lacked experience in Soul Master meditation — they didn't realize that normal meditation shouldn't produce such large Soul Power fluctuations, so strong one could clearly feel it from outside the room.
