Chapter 18 - The Illusion of Choice

Part of D expected to see his roommate splattered onto the pavement below after jumping out of their 10 story high window, but by know he knew that the people at this school were something special altogether.

As she leapt out from the window Roxanne used her ability Stitchwork to create a glowing pink sewing line from the stop where her leg had been on the window sill and used it like a descending climber would a mountain to reach the bottom floor.

A few of the fellow new students in the courtyard looked up with slight amazement, unused to seeing such outward use of Glow. The more veteran students however paid the stunt no mind.

"GET BACK HERE!" Roxanne bellowed slightly out of breath from her descent as she broke into a reluctant ran after the peeper who'd taken the picture of them holding and talking about surge.

If the staff saw that picture they wouldn't get expelled, expulsion wasn't a thing at Blackthorn, no they'd be locked up and beaten before classes even started. She had to get that ginger haired piece of shit.

She ducked and dodged through students, never losing sight of the guy she was running after as he also dodged through the never ending trudge of students. She was definitely faster than him even in her out of slightly breathless state. It wouldn't be long till she was upon him.

The man ducked through a series of bushes and ran into a large gray and red rectangular building. As she ran past the entrance way she saw a sign that'd said 'Biology Building'.

She flung open the doors and pushed past three students who were all lined up seemingly waiting to talk to a professor outside their office.

She saw the runner stop for a moment and look back, scouting for her before ducking to the right to go down the far hall. She'd seen the map briefly when she'd barged in and she knew that the hall to her right would meet with the path the peeper had taken.

But instead of running down it she took out a thread wheel and sewing needle from her pocket since her power always required her to have some sort of thread on her to work. She kneaded between her hands making sure it was rough enough to not accidentally slice or maim the person she was attempting to trap

She took the sewing needle and threw it down the hall to her right, her glow made the needle and the thread stick to the far wall creating and invisible trip wire.

As if almost on cue, the ginger haired peeper ran down the hall way and was subsequently tripped by the wire at the waist. They fell face first over the wire and crushed their drone.

Overtly proud of her quick thinking Roxanne sauntered over to the picture taker, as she held the wire in place by constricting it with her fingers. This was her first time getting a close up look at them. They wore a messy black sports jersey, with holey jeans and dirty converses. The main thing she noticed is their messy bright orange colored curly afro, which partially covered their eyes.

"God, someone with your fashion sense would go around taking pictures of people in their dorms." She said as she stood over the ginger.

"And a henchy like you would be using something like surge- OW" Roxanne brought her black boot down on her victims hand causing them to wince back in pain. She took the opportunity the stomp on their drone where it lie on the black carpeted floor.

She enjoyed it a little too much, she knew if someone saw this and didn't know the context it would make her out to be some sort of bully but she didn't care.

"That'll teach you about peeping on people, now won't it?" She said loud enough that if anyone was around to wonder what had happened she'd look more like the good guy instead of the bad guy.

"I-I can still tell people, I'll still tell them, now get the hell off of my bot!" The ginger said as he took his hand and moved a section of his hair back to reveal his fuchsia colored eyes. Just then D and Max came barging in through the same door Roxanne had gone through, no doubt making the people lined outside of the office by doors rethink their choice of spot.

"Guys I'm over here!" She yelled out down the hall to get their attention. She knew it was them by Max's overtly loud accented voice. As they ran down the hall Max transformed his fist into tungsten using the ring he kept on his ring finger, and threw a punch right at Roxanne's head.

She ducked and the fist seemed to hit the wall behind her but left no sign of damage. "WHAT THE HELL? YOU COULD'VE TAKEN MY HEAD OFF!" She said as she shot back up going to shove Max but as she did she fell face first onto the floor as the image of Max dissipated into smoke.

"What the-" She looked back to where her assailant had been tied down at the legs by her wire and saw that they were now long gone, all that remained was the broken drone on the floor. Roxanne just screamed to the ceiling, bummed that they got away.

However she figured destroying the evidence was good enough for now. As she prepared to leave and return back to her dormitory the real D and Max entered the building. After checking two other buildings they'd thought she'd ran into they finally happened on the correct one.

"Hey over here?" She said instinctively bracing as they jogged towards her, preparing for an attack that never came.

D keeled over, incredibly short of breath as he asked, "so d-did you catch the piece a shit?"

Roxanne just looked to the destroyed remains of the drone on the floor and shrugged. "Sort of? The idiot fell onto his own drone which I'm pretty sure destroyed the picture."

A shrill shriek sounded from down the hall, from an older woman with long green hair and a green blouse. She ran over to the trio, she was some sort of faculty member it seemed.

"What in blazes is going on here? I've had three separate students come to my office to tell me to stop whatever is going on out here."

D stepped up, finally catching his breath. "It was just a little accident, nothing too crazy miss...?"

"It's Mrs. Pryor to you young man." She stepped closer, almost bumping into the wire trap Roxanne had laid out, Roxanne took this as a sign to mentally dissipate the wire and it dissolved into nothing.

"Sorry Mrs. Pryor, we were just helping out our roommate with a project when, as you can see" D pointed to the busted up drone on the floor. "It obviously went awry." He smiled that same smile he'd tried to use to persuade the cops when he'd gotten arrested. Hopefully this time it would work.

Mrs. Pryor looked the boy over, looked at Max, Roxanne and the robot and let out a small sigh. "All right it seems that there is nothing that needs me out here." She said as she turned away from the trio, but before she walked away she looked back at the trio as she said ,"I expect that there will be no more incidents out here once I return to my office?"

"Nope, no more incidents." D said giving her a stock standard wave. She began walking back to her office and rounded the corner of the hall all whilst never taking her eyes off of them.

They all let out a brisk sigh of relief. Max looked at the drone, not that he was good with technology he was mostly just curious. "Did you find out what that dude wanted? Or why he was watching us?"

"Couldn't get any information out of 'em" She said regretfully. "Question is, who would want anything to do with us? We're just a couple of henchys like they said."

D didn't hear the conversation that was unfolding, he was too busy looking at the posters on the wall beside them, more specifically one poster that was for the upcoming election for student body president.

"Guys, I think I know who would..." He said as he pointed to the poster where Spire, but in a normal school outfit, stood in a picture behind bold lettering that said 'Vote For Clea Moreau For President'
