Chapter 1 - Chapter One

King of Sun City

In Sun City, New York, power was everything.

Money controlled the weak. Fear controlled the streets. But above all, one man controlled the city itself.

His name was Denzel Li.

People feared him more than the police, respected him more than politicians, and obeyed him more than the law. One command from him was enough to destroy an entire family. One wrong move against him could make a person disappear overnight.

At only twenty-seven years old, Denzel Li had become the most feared mafia boss in Sun City.

But power was not handed to him.

He earned it.

The city knew him as the ruthless king of the underground world, but very few people knew the real story behind the coldness in his eyes. Very few knew that before the expensive suits, private clubs, dark business meetings, and dangerous enemies, Denzel had once been just a normal boy.

A happy boy.

The Li family was one of the richest families in New York. They owned hotels, companies, real estate businesses, and several international investments. At the head of the family was Jack Li, a powerful businessman respected all over the country.

Jack had two children: Denzel Li and Monica Li.

Denzel was the first child and only son of the Li family. From childhood, everyone admired him. He was intelligent, calm, hardworking, and protective, especially toward his younger sister.

Monica Li was the complete opposite of Denzel.

Where Denzel was quiet, Monica was cheerful.

Where Denzel was feared, Monica was loved.

She was the sunshine of the Li family.

Their mother, Rosa Li, loved her children more than anything in the world. She was kind, caring, and gentle. To Denzel, she was not just his mother—she was his peace.

And that peace disappeared the day she died.

Everything changed after Rosa Li's death.

The once warm and smiling Denzel became cold and emotionless. The boy who used to laugh freely disappeared completely. In his place rose a dangerous man filled with anger and hatred.

At first, people thought time would heal him.

It didn't.

Instead, Denzel buried himself in work and business. At the age of nineteen, he started his own company without using a single dollar from his father. People laughed at him in the beginning because they believed he was only another rich kid trying to prove himself.

But Denzel proved them wrong.

Within a few years, he built companies bigger than his competitors. His business strategies were ruthless and perfect. He feared no one and trusted almost nobody.

Soon, businessmen feared him.

Politicians respected him.

Criminals obeyed him.

That was how Denzel Li became king of Sun City.

But despite all his success, one thing remained untouched—his love for Monica.

Monica was the only person capable of calming him down. The only person who could walk into his office while he was angry and leave safely. Denzel treated her like she was the most precious thing in the world.

And maybe she was.

Monica was now twenty-one years old and studying at one of the top universities in New York City. She was beautiful, intelligent, and kindhearted. Unlike her brother, she hated violence and avoided trouble whenever possible.

She had two very close friends: Safia Williams and Harmony Jones.

The three girls were inseparable.

Safia was loud, funny, and fearless. She always knew how to make Monica laugh even during difficult moments.

Harmony, however, was different.

She was calm, soft-spoken, and mature beyond her age. Harmony understood Monica better than anyone else. Whenever Monica was sad, Harmony was always there beside her.

What Monica didn't know was that Harmony would soon become deeply connected to the Li family in ways none of them expected.

While Monica had her friends, Denzel had his own circle.

His closest friends were Jonathan Weather and Hunter Miller.

The three men had been friends since university. Together, they built businesses, fought enemies, and dominated the underground world of Sun City.

Jonathan Weather was calm, smart, and extremely loyal. He rarely spoke unnecessarily, but when he did, people listened carefully. Many women chased after him, but Jonathan never seemed interested in anyone.

Hunter Miller was completely different. He was playful, confident, and loved trouble. But despite his carefree attitude, he was dangerous when angry.

Together, they were unstoppable.

One night, the three men sat inside Denzel's private club in downtown Sun City. Loud music filled the room while expensive liquor sat untouched on the glass table before them.

Denzel leaned back lazily on the black leather couch, his sharp eyes cold and unreadable.

Hunter sighed dramatically.

"You know, one day your face will freeze permanently from always looking angry."

Jonathan smirked quietly.

Denzel ignored them and poured himself another drink.

"You should relax sometimes," Hunter continued. "You own half the city already."

Denzel's lips curved slightly. "Half?"

Hunter laughed loudly. "Alright. Almost the whole city."

Jonathan shook his head in amusement before his phone buzzed. He checked the message briefly.

"Monica texted," he said calmly.

Immediately, Denzel looked up.

Hunter burst into laughter. "See? Mention Monica and suddenly the great Denzel Li pays attention."

Denzel shot him a cold stare.

Hunter quickly raised both hands. "Relax. I'm joking."

Jonathan ignored them and continued reading the message.

"She says Safia wants to organize a birthday dinner tomorrow."

Denzel frowned slightly. "Monica hates crowded places."

Jonathan nodded. "Apparently Harmony convinced her."

For some unknown reason, the mention of Harmony made Denzel pause briefly.

He had seen Harmony only a few times. Mostly when she came to pick Monica up from the Li mansion or during university events. She never tried to impress him like most women did.

In fact, she barely even looked at him.

That alone made her different.

But Denzel quickly pushed the thought aside.

Love and relationships meant nothing to him anymore.

Not after Jorce Miller.

At the mention of her name, darkness crossed his expression.

Jorce had once been everything to him.

Back in university, before Denzel fully became the feared man he was today, he had fallen deeply in love with Hunter's cousin, Jorce Miller.

She was beautiful, charming, and knew exactly how to make him feel alive again after his mother's death.

For the first time in years, Denzel had allowed himself to love someone completely.

But Jorce destroyed him.

During the lowest moment of his life, she abandoned him without hesitation. She cared more about his money than his heart. After using him for years, she left New York and moved to America with another wealthy man.

The betrayal hardened Denzel completely.

After that day, he stopped believing in love.

"Still thinking about her?" Jonathan suddenly asked quietly.

Denzel's jaw tightened.

Hunter cursed under his breath. "Forget that witch. She never deserved you."

Denzel stood up slowly. "I don't care about her anymore."

But deep inside, part of him still remembered the pain.

Back at the Li mansion, things were far from peaceful.

Three months after Rosa Li's death, Jack Li shocked everyone by announcing his remarriage.

The woman he intended to marry was none other than Rachel Adams—his longtime mistress.

The news destroyed Denzel.

Even Monica cried for days.

The realization that their father had been cheating on Rosa before her death filled Denzel with unbearable hatred. Rumors soon spread that Rosa had suffered terribly before taking her own life.

Denzel blamed Jack completely.

He never forgave him.

On the day of the wedding, Denzel refused to attend.

Instead, he spent the entire night drinking with Jonathan and Hunter at his club while reporters covered Jack Li's luxurious ceremony.

Monica attended only because she had no choice.

That day marked the complete destruction of the Li family.

Rachel officially moved into the mansion shortly after the wedding.

From the very beginning, she hated Denzel and Monica.

To her, they were obstacles standing between her and the Li family wealth.

Rachel had a daughter named Mira.

Mira was beautiful, spoiled, arrogant, and manipulative. She was one year older than Monica and had grown up receiving everything she wanted.

But there was one thing she could never get.

Denzel's attention.

No matter how hard she tried, Denzel treated her like she didn't exist.

And that drove her insane.

Mira wanted everything Monica had.

She wanted the love Denzel gave Monica.

She wanted the respect Monica received.

She even wanted Jonathan Weather.

Unfortunately for her, Jonathan only seemed interested in Monica.

That alone fueled Mira's jealousy.

One afternoon at the Li mansion, Monica sat quietly in the garden while reading a book. The peaceful atmosphere helped calm her stressed mind.

Suddenly, a voice interrupted her.

"You really think this house belongs to you?"

Monica looked up slowly and saw Mira standing nearby with crossed arms.

Monica sighed softly. "I'm not in the mood today, Mira."

Mira laughed coldly. "You act so innocent all the time. It's annoying."

Monica ignored her and returned to her book.

That only angered Mira more.

In one quick movement, Mira slapped the book out of Monica's hands.

Monica stood up immediately. "What is wrong with you?"

"What's wrong with me?" Mira snapped. "Everything in this house should belong to me and my mother—not you."

Before Monica could respond, Mira pushed her violently.

Monica lost balance and nearly fell against the stone pathway.

A cold voice suddenly filled the garden.

"What exactly do you think you're doing?"

Both girls froze instantly.

Denzel stood a few steps away wearing a black suit, his expression terrifyingly calm.

Mira's face turned pale.

"D-Denzel…"

He walked slowly toward them.

Monica quickly looked away, not wanting him to see the tears in her eyes.

Denzel's gaze settled dangerously on Mira.

"You touched my sister?"

Mira panicked immediately. "It was an accident—"

"Stay away from Monica."

His voice was cold enough to freeze the air itself.

Mira clenched her fists painfully.

Denzel ignored her completely and turned toward Monica instead.

"Are you hurt?"

Monica shook her head softly.

Without another word, Denzel picked up her fallen book and handed it back to her carefully.

The small act filled Mira with unbearable jealousy.

She hated Monica.

And after that day, her hatred only grew stronger.

Later that night, Mira sat alone inside her room thinking about Jonathan.

She remembered the way he smiled slightly whenever Monica spoke. The way his eyes softened around her.

It drove her crazy.

"I hate her…" she whispered bitterly.

Meanwhile, somewhere else in the city, danger was already approaching the Li family.

Inside a dark underground building, a group of armed men discussed Denzel Li's growing influence over Sun City.

"He's becoming too powerful," one man muttered nervously.

Another slammed his fist against the table. "Then we destroy him before it's too late."

Far away from them, Denzel stood alone beside the large glass windows of his penthouse office, overlooking the glowing lights of Sun City.

The city belonged to him.

But enemies were gathering.

Betrayal was waiting.

And love—something he thought was long dead—was slowly making its way back into his life through the most unexpected person of all.

Harmony Jones.

The storm was coming.

And none of them were ready for it.
