Shadows Beneath the Empire
The black SUV sped through the empty streets of Sun City while silence filled the atmosphere inside the car.
Denzel sat calmly in the back seat, his expression unreadable as the city lights reflected against the window beside him. Jonathan sat opposite him while Hunter remained unusually quiet for once.
Whenever business turned bloody, jokes disappeared.
"What exactly happened?" Denzel finally asked coldly.
Jonathan adjusted slightly before answering.
"One of our warehouses near the docks was attacked about thirty minutes ago."
"How many men?"
"Three dead. Two injured."
Hunter cursed under his breath. "And the shipment?"
Jonathan's jaw tightened. "Gone."
Silence returned instantly.
Denzel slowly lifted his eyes toward Jonathan.
"Who did it?"
"We're still investigating," Jonathan answered carefully. "But from the way everything was planned… this wasn't random."
Denzel already knew that.
Nobody attacked his businesses without planning carefully beforehand. Whoever was behind it clearly wanted to send a message.
And that alone irritated him.
The car finally stopped outside a large abandoned-looking building near the docks. Several armed guards stood outside immediately lowering their heads respectfully the moment Denzel stepped out of the vehicle.
"Boss."
Denzel ignored them and walked inside.
The warehouse looked like a battlefield.
Broken wooden crates scattered across the floor while blood stained the concrete ground. Several men stood nervously nearby waiting for instructions.
The moment Denzel entered, the atmosphere became heavier.
Everyone feared disappointing him.
One injured man sat against the wall holding his bleeding shoulder. The second he saw Denzel approaching, panic flashed across his face.
"Boss… we tried stopping them—"
"How many attackers?" Denzel interrupted coldly.
"Six… maybe seven."
"And you couldn't stop them?"
The man lowered his head immediately.
Denzel stared at him emotionlessly before turning toward Jonathan.
"Check the security footage."
Jonathan nodded and immediately walked away.
Hunter leaned against one of the nearby crates while lighting a cigarette.
"This city's becoming bold lately," he muttered.
Denzel's expression remained calm, but inside, anger slowly burned.
For years, nobody had dared challenge him openly.
Now suddenly someone was testing his patience.
That could only mean one thing.
A war was coming.

Meanwhile, across the city, Harmony finally returned home after Monica's birthday dinner.
The small apartment was quiet except for the soft sound of the television playing in the background.
The moment Harmony stepped inside, she saw her mother asleep on the couch.
A weak smile appeared on Harmony's face.
Even while sick, her mother always waited for her before sleeping.
Carefully, Harmony walked closer and gently covered her with a blanket.
"You're home?" her mother asked weakly, opening her eyes slowly.
Harmony smiled softly. "You should be resting."
Mrs. Jones sat up slightly. "How was the dinner?"
"It was nice."
"You smiled when you said that," her mother teased quietly.
Harmony laughed softly while removing her shoes.
"It was Monica's birthday. Of course it was nice."
But deep inside, she knew that wasn't the only reason.
For some strange reason, she kept remembering Denzel standing beside her on the balcony.
The way his cold expression softened slightly while talking to her.
The way his eyes watched her so carefully.
Harmony immediately shook the thoughts away.
What was she even thinking?
Denzel Li was completely out of her world.
Men like him didn't belong in ordinary lives.
Her mother noticed her silence immediately.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing," Harmony answered quickly.
Mrs. Jones smiled knowingly but didn't push further.
Suddenly, Harmony's phone buzzed.
It was a message from Monica.
Monica:
Thank you for coming tonight ❤️
Harmony smiled faintly before replying.
Harmony:
Happy birthday again. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
A second message appeared almost immediately.
Monica:
By the way… my brother asked if you got home safely.
Harmony froze completely.
"What happened?" her mother asked curiously.
"Nothing."
But her cheeks had already betrayed her.

Back at the Li mansion, tension filled the atmosphere once again.
Denzel walked inside the mansion close to midnight, immediately noticing voices coming from the living room.
Rachel sat comfortably beside Jack Li while Mira scrolled through her phone nearby.
The moment Rachel noticed Denzel, her fake smile appeared instantly.
"You're finally home."
Denzel ignored her completely and continued walking.
Rachel's expression darkened slightly.
Jack sighed heavily. "Denzel."
He stopped walking but didn't turn around.
"We need to talk."
"I'm tired."
"When are you not?" Jack replied coldly.
For a moment, silence filled the room.
The relationship between father and son had become almost nonexistent over the years.
Denzel slowly turned around.
"What do you want?"
Rachel crossed her arms dramatically. "Is that any way to speak to your father?"
Denzel's cold eyes landed on her immediately.
"I wasn't speaking to you."
The atmosphere instantly became tense.
Mira smirked slightly while watching the argument.
Rachel forced a fake laugh. "See? This is exactly why people fear you."
"Good," Denzel answered coldly.
Jack stood up angrily. "Enough!"
Everyone became silent.
Jack looked exhausted as he stared at his son.
"You can hate me all you want," he said quietly, "but this family cannot continue like this."
Denzel's jaw tightened instantly.
"Family?" he repeated bitterly. "You destroyed this family a long time ago."
Rachel's face darkened immediately.
Jack looked away painfully.
For a brief moment, guilt flashed across his face.
But Denzel noticed.
And it only deepened his anger.
Without another word, he walked away upstairs.
Mira watched him leave carefully, obsession clear in her eyes.
One day, she promised herself, Denzel would notice her.
No matter what it took.

The next morning, Monica entered the dining room while rubbing her sleepy eyes.
To her surprise, Denzel already sat there drinking coffee while reading through documents.
"You're awake early," Monica said softly.
Denzel glanced at her briefly. "You have class today."
Monica narrowed her eyes suspiciously before sitting down beside him.
"You sound like my father."
Denzel looked disgusted immediately.
"Never compare me to him."
Monica sighed softly.
Despite everything, she hated seeing Denzel constantly angry. Ever since their mother died, he carried so much hatred inside him that sometimes she worried it would eventually destroy him completely.
"Denzel," she said quietly.
"Hm?"
"You should try being happy sometimes."
He looked at her blankly.
"Happy?"
"Yes."
Denzel almost laughed.
Happiness felt like something distant now. Something that no longer belonged to him.
Monica smiled slightly. "Maybe you just need the right person."
Denzel immediately understood where this conversation was going.
"No."
Monica gasped dramatically. "I didn't even say anything yet!"
"You were about to mention Harmony."
Monica looked offended.
"Well… maybe."
Denzel returned his attention calmly to the documents.
Monica leaned closer mischievously.
"You like her."
"No."
"You do."
"I don't."
Monica grinned proudly. "That's the most interested I've ever seen you in a woman."
Denzel finally looked at her.
"You talk too much."
Monica laughed loudly.
Before Denzel could respond, Jonathan suddenly entered the dining room.
His expression immediately erased the light mood.
"We found something."
Denzel stood up instantly.
"What?"
Jonathan placed a file on the table.
"The men who attacked the warehouse weren't working alone."
Denzel's eyes darkened slightly.
"There's someone backing them financially."
"Who?"
Jonathan hesitated briefly.
"We're still investigating… but there's something else."
Denzel remained silent.
Jonathan's voice became serious.
"Someone's been watching Monica."
The entire room became still.
Monica's smile disappeared immediately.
Denzel's expression turned terrifyingly calm.
"What did you say?"
Jonathan sighed quietly. "One of our men spotted suspicious vehicles near Monica's university twice this week."
Monica looked confused. "What? Why would anyone watch me?"
But Denzel already understood.
This wasn't business anymore.
This was personal.
And that was the worst mistake anyone could make.
Because Denzel Li could tolerate attacks against himself.
But threatening Monica?
That was unforgivable.
Slowly, Denzel picked up his phone.
His voice became cold enough to freeze the room itself.
"Find out who's behind this."
Jonathan nodded once.
"And when you do?" Hunter asked from the doorway after overhearing everything.
Denzel's eyes turned completely emotionless.
"They'll wish they never touched my family."
