Chapter 2 - Chapter Two

The Girl He Couldn't Ignore

Morning arrived slowly over Sun City, but peace never truly lasted in a city ruled by fear, money, and power.

The streets were already alive before sunrise. Expensive cars filled the roads while ordinary people rushed to work, trying to survive another day in a city controlled by dangerous men hiding behind expensive suits and billion-dollar companies.

And above all those men stood only one name.

Denzel Li.

People feared him more than the law itself.

Inside the tallest building in downtown Sun City, silence covered the top floor of Li Corporation. The atmosphere alone was enough to make grown men nervous. Employees moved carefully, speaking in low voices whenever Denzel Li was around.

At the center of the luxurious office stood Denzel himself.

His tall figure faced the massive glass wall overlooking the city below him. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, his expensive watch shining faintly beneath the morning light. His expression remained cold and unreadable as always.

The city looked peaceful from above.

But Denzel knew better than anyone that darkness existed everywhere underneath those bright lights.

Behind him, Hunter Miller sat carelessly on the large leather couch while scrolling through his phone. Jonathan Weather sat nearby reviewing several business documents calmly.

Unlike Hunter, Jonathan always looked serious.

Hunter suddenly sighed dramatically.

"You know," he began lazily, "one day your face is going to freeze permanently from always looking angry."

Denzel didn't even turn around.

"I'm not angry."

Hunter burst into laughter.

Jonathan adjusted his glasses slightly before speaking. "You threatened three businessmen yesterday."

"They deserved it," Denzel replied calmly.

Hunter shook his head in amusement. "See why people are scared of you?"

Finally, Denzel turned around slowly and sat behind his large office desk.

The room instantly felt colder.

Jonathan placed the tablet down. "The Chicago shipment arrived safely last night. No problems."

Denzel nodded once. "Good."

"And the investors from Tokyo?" Jonathan asked.

"Reschedule the meeting," Denzel answered without hesitation.

Hunter stared at him suspiciously. "You hate meetings."

"I hate wasting time."

Hunter laughed again. "Sometimes I wonder how Monica is even related to you."

At the mention of his sister's name, Denzel's expression softened slightly.

Only slightly.

Monica was the only person capable of changing his mood without even trying.

Hunter leaned forward mischievously.

"Speaking of Monica… tonight is her birthday dinner."

Denzel remained silent.

Hunter grinned wider. "And Harmony will be there."

Jonathan immediately looked away to hide his smile.

Denzel narrowed his eyes slightly. "What exactly are you implying?"

Hunter raised both hands innocently. "Nothing! I just noticed you suddenly started paying attention."

Denzel ignored him completely, but the name stayed in his mind longer than it should have.

Harmony Jones.

There was something unusual about her.

Most women acted differently around him. Some became nervous. Others desperately tried to gain his attention because of his power, wealth, or influence.

Harmony did none of those things.

Whenever she looked at him, there was no fear in her eyes.

No greed.

No fake admiration.

She treated him like a normal person.

And strangely… Denzel didn't know how to feel about that.

At New York City University, the atmosphere was completely different.

Students filled the large campus while laughter and conversations echoed through the hallways. Monica Li walked peacefully beside her two closest friends, Safia Williams and Harmony Jones.

Safia was talking nonstop as usual while Monica laughed softly beside her.

"I'm serious," Safia complained dramatically. "Your brother terrifies me."

Monica rolled her eyes playfully. "Denzel isn't scary."

Both Safia and Harmony stopped walking instantly.

Monica blinked innocently. "What?"

Safia stared at her in disbelief.

"Monica," she said slowly, "your brother literally controls half the city."

"Not half," Harmony corrected quietly.

Safia pointed immediately. "See? Even Harmony agrees!"

Harmony laughed softly while Monica crossed her arms defensively.

"He's only overprotective."

Safia nearly screamed.

"Overprotective?" she repeated loudly. "Monica, your brother once threatened a professor because he made you cry during class!"

Monica groaned in embarrassment.

"That happened one time."

Harmony covered her mouth while laughing quietly.

Safia continued dramatically. "And don't forget the poor waiter who accidentally spilled water on your dress last year."

Monica immediately looked horrified. "Please stop talking."

"What?" Safia asked innocently. "Your brother looked ready to destroy the entire restaurant."

Harmony laughed harder this time.

Despite Monica's embarrassment, seeing her friends smile made her happy.

Moments like this were rare.

For a few minutes, Monica could forget about the tension waiting for her at home.

As they continued walking across campus, students nearby began whispering quietly.

Some stared nervously.

Others quickly moved out of their path.

Monica noticed immediately and sighed softly.

"They're staring again."

Safia rolled her eyes. "That's because you're Denzel Li's sister."

Being connected to Denzel came with many problems.

People either feared Monica or tried using her to get closer to her brother's wealth and influence. Very few people treated her normally anymore.

But Safia and Harmony always did.

That was why Monica trusted them completely.

Suddenly, Harmony's phone rang inside her bag.

She checked the screen and her expression changed slightly.

"I'll be back," she said softly before stepping away from them.

Monica watched her leave with concern.

Safia noticed immediately.

"She's been acting strange lately," Monica whispered.

Safia sighed sadly. "Her mom's hospital condition is getting worse."

Monica's face fell immediately.

Harmony rarely spoke about her personal life, but Monica knew enough to understand how difficult things were for her.

Harmony's father died years ago, leaving her alone with her sick mother. Since then, Harmony worked multiple part-time jobs while studying just to pay bills and hospital expenses.

Yet despite everything, she still smiled.

She still stayed kind.

A few feet away, Harmony answered the phone nervously.

"Hello?"

"Miss Jones," a cold male voice said from the other side. "Your mother's surgery payment is overdue."

Harmony closed her eyes slowly.

"I know," she whispered softly. "Please… I just need more time."

"You've already been given more time."

Her heart tightened painfully.

"I'm trying my best."

"If payment isn't completed soon, the surgery will be postponed."

The call ended immediately.

Harmony slowly lowered the phone, fighting tears threatening to fall.

She felt exhausted.

Between school, work, and hospital stress, she barely slept anymore. But she refused to give up because her mother was all she had left.

"Harmony?"

She quickly wiped her eyes before turning around.

Monica stood nearby with concern written all over her face.

"Are you okay?"

Harmony forced a smile. "I'm fine."

Monica clearly didn't believe her.

But instead of asking questions, Monica gently held her hand.

"Come on," she said softly. "We'll be late for class."

Harmony nodded quietly.

But fear continued growing inside her heart.

That evening, Monica's birthday dinner was held at one of the most luxurious restaurants in Sun City.

The rooftop area had been reserved privately for the event. Golden lights decorated the beautiful space while soft music played quietly in the background.

Rich businessmen, university friends, and important guests filled the restaurant.

Everything looked perfect.

But the atmosphere changed instantly the moment Denzel Li arrived.

Conversations became quieter.

Several people lowered their eyes nervously.

Others stared openly in admiration.

Denzel walked inside wearing an expensive black suit, his expression calm and unreadable. Jonathan and Hunter followed closely behind him.

The powerful aura surrounding the three men immediately attracted attention.

Safia nearly choked on her drink.

"Oh God," she whispered dramatically. "Your brother looks like he walked straight out of a mafia movie."

Monica laughed softly.

Denzel ignored everyone else completely and walked directly toward Monica.

"You actually came," Monica said happily.

Denzel placed a small black gift box in front of her.

"Happy birthday."

Monica smiled brightly before hugging him tightly despite his obvious discomfort.

Hunter laughed loudly. "One day she'll embarrass you publicly and I'll enjoy every second."

Denzel ignored him.

Monica opened the gift carefully and gasped softly.

Inside the box rested a beautiful diamond bracelet shining beneath the lights.

Safia screamed immediately.

"That bracelet probably costs more than my future!"

Monica looked up at Denzel emotionally.

"You didn't have to buy this."

"If you don't like it—"

"I love it," Monica interrupted quickly.

For a brief moment, warmth appeared in Denzel's eyes.

Jonathan noticed it immediately but stayed silent.

Then suddenly, Hunter looked toward the restaurant entrance.

"Well… speaking of beautiful people."

Everyone turned slightly.

Harmony had arrived.

The moment Denzel's eyes landed on her, the entire room seemed quieter somehow.

Harmony wore a simple dark blue dress that flowed gently around her figure. Unlike most women at the party covered in expensive jewelry and makeup, Harmony looked natural.

Elegant without trying.

Beautiful without effort.

And somehow… impossible to ignore.

She looked slightly nervous standing there.

Monica immediately stood up excitedly.

"Harmony!"

Harmony smiled warmly before walking over.

"Sorry I'm late."

Safia hugged her dramatically. "You look amazing."

Harmony laughed softly.

Then her eyes met Denzel's.

For one brief second, something shifted strangely between them.

"Good evening, Mr. Li," she greeted politely.

Denzel held her gaze slightly longer than necessary.

"Harmony."

Hunter nearly coughed from shock while Jonathan quietly looked away.

Monica noticed nothing.

The dinner continued peacefully afterward.

Safia entertained everyone with ridiculous stories from university while Monica laughed harder than she had in weeks.

Jonathan occasionally smiled quietly while Hunter continued joking nonstop.

Meanwhile, Denzel remained mostly silent.

But his eyes kept drifting toward Harmony.

She smiled gently while listening to Monica speak.

She laughed quietly at Safia's jokes.

She looked tired sometimes when she thought nobody noticed.

And somehow… Denzel noticed everything.

For the first time in years, someone managed to hold his attention without even trying.

Later during dinner, Harmony quietly excused herself and stepped onto the rooftop balcony for fresh air.

The cool night breeze touched her skin gently as she stared at the glowing city lights below.

For a moment, she allowed herself to breathe peacefully.

"You seem troubled."

Harmony turned slightly in surprise.

Denzel stood beside her.

She hadn't even heard him approach.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

The city lights reflected beautifully across Harmony's face while Denzel studied her quietly.

"I'm alright," she said softly.

"You're lying."

His direct answer shocked her slightly.

Harmony laughed softly. "Do I look that obvious?"

"Yes."

Something about his honesty made her smile faintly.

"You don't have to pretend around me," Denzel said calmly.

Harmony looked at him carefully.

"That's funny."

"What is?"

"Most people are too scared to even breathe around you."

To her surprise, Denzel smirked slightly.

"And you're not afraid of me?"

Harmony thought quietly before answering.

"Should I be?"

For the first time in a very long time, Denzel felt something unfamiliar inside his chest.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Something softer.

Before he could understand the feeling, his phone suddenly rang loudly.

The softness in his expression disappeared instantly.

Denzel answered immediately.

"What happened?"

Jonathan's serious voice spoke from the other side.

"There's been an attack."

Denzel's eyes darkened dangerously.

"Where?"

"One of our warehouses. Three men are dead."

Everything about Denzel changed immediately.

The calm man standing beside Harmony disappeared completely.

The mafia king returned.

Cold.

Dangerous.

Emotionless.

Harmony noticed the terrifying shift instantly.

"I have to leave," Denzel said coldly.

Harmony nodded slowly.

Before walking away, Denzel paused briefly.

"Get home safely."

Then he disappeared inside the restaurant.

Harmony stood frozen for several seconds afterward.

Meanwhile downstairs, Jonathan and Hunter were already waiting beside the car outside.

Hunter no longer looked playful.

"This wasn't random," Jonathan said seriously.

Denzel entered the car calmly, though darkness filled his eyes.

"I know."

Somewhere deep within Sun City, enemies were beginning to move against him.

A war was slowly coming.

And without realizing it, Harmony Jones had already become connected to the most dangerous man in the city.
