Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Borrowing Arrows with Straw Men

Mufasa had just finished watching a beast fight performance and was about to leave when he was stopped by several Blue Priestesses of the Temple of Grace.

"Warrior from afar, the Green Priestess invites you to the temple for a talk."

Mufasa looked at them and asked,

"Who sent you?"

"The Green Priestess received a divine revelation, telling us to find you."

"A divine revelation, huh!" Mufasa stroked his chin. Although he felt it wasn't very reliable, he decided to go and see.

Mufasa and Melisandre arrived at the Temple of Grace and met the Green Priestess they spoke of.

Her green eyes seemed to share some similarities with the Lannister family. She looked very old, probably in her eighties.

She wore a veil, covering most of her face, leaving only a pair of wise green eyes for everyone to see.

"Warrior from afar! A crisis is coming, Meereen is about to face destruction, and only you can save Meereen!" the Green Priestess said.

"Priestess, what exactly is this crisis? As a religious figure, you can't be fear-mongering!" Mufasa said.

"Someone riding a dark steed is about to arrive in Meereen. Their iron hooves may flatten this city."

"Dothraki?" Mufasa asked.

The Dothraki sometimes did come to Slaver's Bay to raid, but usually they would leave after obtaining some money.

In the past, they had never engaged in siege warfare.

Because the Dothraki only had cavalry and did not build siege tools like ladders.

"Exactly, their leader is a powerful Khal who wants to take Meereen to prove his strength."

"What do you want me to do?" Mufasa asked.

"Save Meereen!"

"I am a guest, an outsider, a VIP! You actually want to use my power? Do you think I would agree?" Mufasa looked at her with amusement.

"You will, because the gods have given me the answer! And you will receive a corresponding reward! I believe you will be satisfied with this reward!" the Green Priestess said.

"What reward?" Mufasa asked.

"Alchemy!" the Green Priestess said.

It must be said that this reward truly moved Mufasa. Although the Lannister family possessed mountains of gold, the gold would eventually run out. Without gold, the Lannister family would fall from grace, becoming inferior even to a second-rate family.

"May I verify in advance if the alchemy you speak of is real?" Mufasa asked.

"You may!"

The Green Priestess had a scroll delivered to Mufasa. Mufasa did not take it, instead asking Melisandre to inspect it.

Melisandre opened the scroll and quickly scanned it with her beautiful eyes, finding nothing that seemed fake, at least not to her knowledge.

"Your companion seems to be a priestess of the Lord of Light; she should be able to discern truth from falsehood!"

"It's real!" Melisandre whispered into Mufasa's ear.

"After it's done, this will be yours," the Green Priestess said.

"I need the assistance of Meereen's Good Masters. Whatever I tell them to do, they must do," Mufasa said.

"Very well, I will inform them."

Only then did Mufasa agree to help Meereen overcome this crisis.

After Mufasa left the Temple of Grace, he immediately went to meet the noble representatives of Meereen, who had already received the news from the Green Priestess.

"Ser Mufasa, our Meereen has business dealings with the Lannister family, so please do help us," said a tall Good Master.

His name was long and complicated; Mufasa only remembered him as Bostan.

"Gather all the soybeans and black beans in Meereen and roast them. I have a great use for them!" This was Mufasa's first command.

"Why? Shouldn't we inspect the city defenses first? And your thousand Unsullied must help us defend the city!" said another Good Master named Kalth.

"I will help you defend the city, don't worry! Trust me, you won't go wrong."

Seeing Mufasa's confidence, the others believed his words.

A few days later, a powerful khalasar indeed arrived outside Meereen.

Tens of thousands of cavalry spread out like ants on the ground outside the city.

On the city walls, Mufasa and the Good Masters of Meereen looked at the enemy forces, all gasping in surprise.

"That's Khal Drogo's khalasar. It's the strongest of all the khalasars currently, even though he hasn't united all the Dothraki yet." Someone recognized whose tribe it was.

"Khal Drogo, huh! So it's him!"

Mufasa used a Lysene spyglass to see the man riding the dark steed. His whip was longer than anyone else's, and he was the tallest; Mufasa estimated that even if he wasn't eight feet tall like the Mountain, he was at least seven feet tall like tall Duncan.

Khal Drogo led his bloodriders to the foot of Meereen. He had his slave translator translate to the people on the city walls.

"Hand over half of the city's treasures, and we will not attack. Otherwise, Meereen will be destroyed. You have one night to consider."

Drogo then led his men to set up camp half a mile away.

"Half of the wealth, their appetite is too great."

"Absolutely impossible, Meereen will never submit to backward barbarians."

"One night, huh!" Mufasa pondered. He had an idea that might be worth trying.

"Ser Mufasa, do you have any good strategies?" Bostan asked, and the other Good Masters also looked at Mufasa.

Mufasa looked at them with amusement. These slave masters, all they knew was how to make money, play, and enjoy themselves. They had no sense of preparing for danger. When war came, they either paid to avoid disaster or hired sellswords.

They always relied on outsiders, unlike the lords of Westeros who had their own armies, ready to be summoned and to fight.

"My lords, there's no need to panic. Mere Drogo is just a barbarian! The Dothraki are ignorant and backward, uncivilized, savage, and cruel. How can such an army defeat our elite soldiers?" Mufasa said.

Until dusk, many Good Masters were still anxiously awaiting Mufasa's actions.

But Mufasa ate and drank as usual, chatting and laughing with the Lannister soldiers.

Yet Podrick and the others were very nervous!

"Lord Commander! Aren't we going to do something?" Podrick asked.

"What time is it now?" Mufasa asked.

"It's the hour of the wolf!"

"Good, it's time to move out!"

Mufasa led a hundred Unsullied silently out of the city, each carrying two straw men.

When Mufasa and his men reached a spot two hundred meters from the Dothraki camp, they put down the straw men.

"Go to the nearby forest and drive all the animals out, making sure they charge towards the enemy camp," Mufasa ordered.

Rat and a group of Unsullied went to carry out Mufasa's command.

Soon after, all the animals in the forest, big and small, rushed towards Khal Drogo's camp, disrupting their evening feast.

"Damn it, this must be the work of those despicable Meereenese. My blood of my blood, let me lead men to break through the city gates!" said Koho, the most brutal of Drogo's bloodriders.

"My blood of my blood, the Meereenese must have another purpose for doing this. Let me take some men to scout ahead!"

said Cohollo. He was older than Drogo and had saved Drogo's life when he was young. Thus, he was always highly respected in Drogo's khalasar.

Khal Drogo nodded.

Cohollo led a few cavalrymen out to scout, but they hadn't gone far when they saw figures with long spears, dressed in Unsullied armor, not far away.

"It's the Unsullied, be careful!" Cohollo quickly ordered them to stop advancing.

The Unsullied were the only infantry capable of defeating their Dothraki cavalry.

Cohollo dared not advance rashly and instead chose to return and inform Khal Drogo.

"What? The Unsullied are already nearby? Do not engage them in close combat. Shoot them all dead with arrows, do not spare any arrows."

At Khal Drogo's command, the Dothraki began to unleash a barrage of arrows in the direction of the Unsullied. That night, they fired almost half of their arrows, with as many as 150,000 arrows embedded in the ground outside Meereen.

However, because it was night, the Dothraki were not adept at night combat, so they did not rashly come to check the enemy's casualties.
