Chapter 35 - [35] Dark Shadows Stir: Voldemort's First Brush with Harry

"Argus, why are you sitting in the back?"

"Of course! Professor Quirrell only knows how to read from the textbook, and he even reads it haltingly. Who would want to listen to him!"

"I really don't know what Dumbledore was thinking. Why did he hire such a useless person to be our Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher?"

"..."

Argus listened to the discussions of his classmates but did not offer any explanation.

He sat quietly in the back row, picked up a book and held it in front of him.

He knew that Quirrell was definitely not as simple as he appeared in class.

A bright student from Ravenclaw, with a strong desire to explore magic, and dares to wander alone in the Dark Forest.

If he were truly worthless, Voldemort would never have chosen him as his host.

Hogwarts' cowardly behavior was merely a cover-up and a burden on Voldemort.

Inside the classroom, without Argus leading the way, and given Quirrell's already poor reputation among the students...

The first few rows were like a university general education class; you couldn't see a single person.

Students squeezed to the back as much as they could, while those who arrived late could only sit in the middle, grumbling and complaining.

A strong smell of garlic heralded Quirrell's arrival.

The classroom was immediately filled with coughing.

Quirrell gave an awkward laugh and walked to the podium.

"Classmates, please take out my...our textbook, the one called 'Dark Arts: A Guide to Self-Defense'."

"Turn...turn to the first page."

"Today we're going to talk about... about Puffskein."

He spoke haltingly even in just a few words, wasting several seconds of class time.

The rest of the lesson was even more boring.

Even though Puffskein is just a harmless magical creature, rated as an XX magical creature by the Ministry of Magic, it is basically harmless to wizards.

You can't even use magic to drive them away.

Some wizarding families even keep them as pets.

But Quirrell presented such simple content in a completely contradictory manner.

Not only is it all textbook content, but it's also explained in a way that leaves people completely confused.

Argus was initially puzzled, wondering how there could be no one listening to a lecture if it was just a matter of reading from the textbook.

Now he finally understood!

It's not that he doesn't want to listen, it's that he simply can't find any part of the book he's reading!

While reading the textbook, Quirrell tried asking the students a few questions, only to find that no one paid any attention to him.

A slightly embarrassed expression appeared on his face.

"Give me your body!"

A hoarse voice rang in Quirrell's mind, followed by an irresistible force.

Quirrell's eyes changed.

No longer standing blankly in the center of the podium reading the textbook as before, he walked around among the students with great interest.

Argus, who had been observing from the shadows, felt a chill run down his spine!

He lowered his head even further, afraid of attracting Quirrell's attention.

Just then, Voldemort closed the book in his hand.

Click!

The sound wasn't loud, but it attracted everyone's attention.

"If you find studying textbooks too boring, why don't we try a new learning method?"

Voldemort took out his wand, thoroughly enjoying the attention he received from countless students.

He had wanted to be the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher for a long time, but Dumbledore had always refused.

Until he started the Wizarding Wars.

He thought he'd never have another chance, but it happened with Quirrell.

"Please put down your textbooks and take out your magic wands."

With a wave of his wand, Voldemort caused everyone's textbooks to instantly close and be gathered to one side.

The magical scene elicited a gasp from the young wizards.

Voldemort was pleased with the crowd's reaction, and his constant pacing made it seem as if he wasn't giving a lecture.

It was more like giving a speech on stage.

"To learn Defense Against the Dark Arts, you must first understand what Dark Arts is!"

Several students, drawn by his previous magic, immediately raised their hands upon hearing the question.

Voldemort chuckled: "In my class, you don't need to raise your hand. You can say whatever you want."

"Dark Arts is magic that can harm people!"

"Magic without a counter-spell is Dark Arts!"

"The Dark Arts wizard uses Dark Arts!"

"..."

Most young wizards didn't have a precise understanding of Dark Arts and simply answered based on their own assumptions.

"Mr. Grindelwald, what are your thoughts?"

After Voldemort finished commenting on the answers of the young wizards, he suddenly turned the question to Argus.

Argus narrowed his eyes, about to give a perfunctory answer.

But then Voldemort spoke again.

"With Mr. Grindelwald's knowledge, he will surely be able to give us a perfect answer."

"I don't think you'd refuse an opportunity to boost your house's reputation, would you?"

Argus cursed inwardly at Voldemort's ambiguous smile!

Old fox!

They're using the house to pressure me!

A simple provocation tactic was used to put Argus directly on the hot seat.

In past classes, Argus had demonstrated his extensive knowledge more than once. If he answered casually, it would obviously make the other Slytherin students think that he was just fooling around and that he didn't care about the honor of the house.

This would be a fatal blow to his image!

He stood up and thought for a moment.

"The judgment of Dark Arts should be based on whether the spellcaster has strong malice."

"For example..."

Argus picked up his wand and pointed it at the podium.

"Aguamenti!"

Several streams of water shot out and landed directly at Voldemort's feet.

"The clear spring water may seem like a curse to many, but if the flow is allowed to continue to expand until it is enough to submerge a person, it can also kill a wizard."

"Therefore, I believe that any magic released with strong malice can be called Dark Arts."

"Unique insight!"

A hint of praise flashed in Voldemort's eyes.

In his mind, Argus' answer would be a summary of the previous students' answers, along with some textbook knowledge.

Unexpectedly, Argus gave him such a big surprise.

Even he had only gained this understanding in the third grade.

"Mr. Grindelwald, please have a seat."

"For your perfect answer, Slytherin gets five points!"

With a flick of his sleeve, the water stains on the ground disappeared completely.

The masterful, silent, and wandless spellcasting once again sparked discussion among the young wizards.

"As Mr. Grindelwald said, it is not only magic that can harm people or has no counter-curse that is called Dark Arts."

"Any magic can be used to kill if it is used with strong malice."

"Of course, in most people's eyes, Dark Arts is mainly divided into three types, Mr. Grindelwald?"

"There are three types of Dark Arts: jinxes, hexes, and curses. Among them, curses are the most evil, hexes are in between, and jinxes are the least evil," Argus replied calmly.

"Very good!" Voldemort nodded, his tone suddenly turning cold.

"But you've missed one thing, and that is... the Unforgivable Curse!"

He turned his head and stared sharply at Harry.

"Mr. Potter!"

"Please tell me, what spells are known as the Unforgivable Curse?"
