After apologizing to his friends for bailing, Baiye closed the chat window. Sakura was still staring at him anxiously, so he decided to explain the origin of the marks on their hands.
A ritual devised by the three founding families—Einzbern, Tohsaka, and Matou—once every sixty years. The Grail grants Master eligibility; Masters summon Servants; Servants kill one another; the victor claims the Grail…
"That means… Onii-chan, me, and… that man," Sakura whispered, mouth slightly open, "we're enemies?"
"Enemies in name only," Baiye said. "How it actually plays out depends on the people making decisions."
He gave an example: "Tokiomi and Kirei both received Command Spells, but they still maintain a teacher-student relationship, don't they?"
Sakura thought, then nodded firmly. "Then I'll listen to you from now on!"
"Alright," Baiye chuckled, giving her a head pat. "Then I'll thank you in advance, Sakura."
Not long after, the porridge was ready.
After breakfast, they moved to the living room and used a jar of mercury found in Zouken's storage to draw the simplest possible spirit-summoning circle.
In form, it was a Master summoning a Servant. In truth, the Holy Grail did the summoning; the Master mostly provided the "qualification." So the ritual only needed to exist—it didn't need to be elaborate.
"The book says you need a relic—something with deep ties to the Heroic Spirit—as a catalyst," Sakura said, hugging a textbook-like tome from the Matou library. She watched Baiye write a few lines on a sheet of paper and place it in the circle. "Aren't you… missing that?"
"That's only if you're trying to summon a specific Heroic Spirit," Baiye explained. "Without a catalyst, the summoning is random—but not truly random. It's influenced by the summoner's personality, circumstances, and so on."
"In other words, ignoring pure strength, the Servant you get this way should have extremely high compatibility with you."
"And I don't actually need overwhelming combat power."
Sakura tilted her head. "Then what do you need?"
"Disposition," Baiye said. "If you remember my talk with the old worm yesterday, you might recall I admitted I'm not a magus."
"So my purpose in this war is to see if there's a way for me to gain magical aptitude."
"Originally, I put more hope in the Grail as the victor's prize. But something I found in the Matou library made me want to gamble at the summoning stage."
There were seven orthodox classes: Saber, Lancer, Archer, Rider, Caster, Assassin, Berserker.
The Caster class, as a spellcaster, required extremely high-level magecraft.
In other words—setting aside rare cases like artists and writers—any Servant who manifested as Caster would, even if not a visitor from the Age of Gods, typically surpass modern magi in magecraft.
A magus of that caliber might possess a method to grant Magic Circuits to an ordinary person.
"So what you wrote on that paper…?" Sakura asked, eyeing the center of the circle.
"Think of it as a patch I'm not even sure will work," Baiye said. "But since I have a class-specific incantation, and I'll probably be among the first Masters to summon, I should be able to get a Caster."
"As for whether the Caster I summon is the kind I want…"
"Even if my luck's bad, if they're a Caster, they should at least know basic Reinforcement."
"And if my luck is really bad and I somehow get a Caster who can't even use Reinforcement—then it's just back to square one. I win the Grail myself."
Sakura nodded, half-understanding.
Baiye gestured for her to step back and looked at the three marks on his hand.
He had no Magic Circuits, but in this world, one source of magical energy was life force itself; Magic Circuits were essentially the organ that converted life force into magical energy.
If the Grail system had branded him with Command Spells, then the bare minimum of summoning should be possible… right?
With a trace of uncertainty, he began the standard incantation.
Five "Let it be filled," the foundation of the contract, the declaration: "Thy body shall be under my command, my fate shall be with thy sword." The oath to "create all good in the world and destroy all evil in the world." Then an added line pointing the ritual toward the Caster class.
The circle flared as magical energy surged.
And as he spoke the final words—"You who are bound by the sevenfold chains of the Three Great Words, come forth from the Ring of Restraint, Guardian of the Scales—"—
A tall, exquisitely-featured figure manifested in the light: snow-white skin, long silver hair, and eyes like cold gemstones.
That appearance…
"Caster. Morgan le Fay," she said, gaze settling on Baiye. "You are the one who summoned me."
