Chapter 28 - Refuge in a Hotel

Ava's POV

The van smelled like coffee and someone's old lunch, and she had never been so grateful for an unremarkable smell in her life.

Price drove. Leo sat beside her in the back and made calls she mostly couldn't hear because he kept his voice low and turned slightly away, which she had accepted as just how he operated. She sat with her hand pressed against her ribs and watched the city move past the window and thought about Dominic.

"Is he okay?" she asked, during a gap between calls. "Dominic."

Leo looked at her.

"He went left at the market entrance," she said. "I didn't see where he went after."

"He's accounted for," Leo said.

"That's not what I asked."

A beat. "He got clear. He's fine."
