Chapter 15 — Time skip

Five years of rigorous training had shaped the young cadets of Krypton's Academy into formidable strategists and warriors. Von-Ra, now thirteen, stood among them—not yet a superpowered being, yet already a master of observation, adaptation, and leadership.

The training grounds were no longer the simple arenas of earlier years. The instructors had devised a multi-layered combat simulation designed to challenge every sense and skill. Holographic enemy units moved unpredictably, energy barriers shifted dynamically, and terrain constantly morphed.

Von-Ra's squad of twelve faced immediate threats from three directions. Explosions erupted as simulated drones descended from above, collapsing walls split their path, and holographic civilians screamed for evacuation.

"Team Alpha, hold the eastern corridor. Beta, secure the northern passage. Gamma, assist civilians near the central plaza. Delta, intercept rogue units approaching from the south," Von-Ra commanded, his voice calm but firm.

His golden eyes scanned the field, calculating probabilities, anticipating missteps, and adjusting strategy in real-time. Every cadet in his squad moved with precision, responding not out of fear, but confidence in their leader.

From the northern flank, a squad of rogue robotic units advanced rapidly. Von-Ra analyzed their pattern: Heavy strikes, predictable trajectory, slow recovery after each attack.

"Gamma team, flank left. Delta, draw them toward the energy barriers. I'll handle the initial breach," he ordered.

The combat erupted. Von-Ra moved fluidly, dodging, redirecting, and countering. The robotic units overextended, and using their momentum against them, Von-Ra sent the first wave tumbling into the holographic energy barriers, temporarily disabling them.

Koryn's squad was simultaneously engaged. He shouted instructions, coordinating counterattacks. His style was more aggressive, relying on raw speed and force. Mistakes were made, but each misstep taught him and his team lessons in adaptability and cohesion.

Observation alone is not enough, Koryn thought. I need precision, timing, and trust in my team.

Suddenly, the gravity field in the central plaza fluctuated wildly. Cadets were forced to jump, spin, and stabilize themselves mid-air. Von-Ra's mind calculated trajectories: If I pivot 45 degrees to the right while the platform shifts, I can intercept the rogue unit and redirect it toward Gamma.

He executed the maneuver flawlessly, flipping mid-air, redirecting the rogue unit with minimal effort. One of his cadets stumbled, but Von-Ra caught them instinctively and whispered, "Focus on timing, not force. You'll adjust."

Meanwhile, Koryn's squad struggled to adapt to the sudden environmental changes. Koryn barked orders, his voice tinged with frustration, but he adjusted quickly. His drive pushed him forward, learning from each mistake.

The instructors then initiated the most complex phase: all four squads were pitted against a combined threat of rogue units, collapsing structures, and simulated civilian panic.

Von-Ra's squad coordinated seamlessly. He split tasks carefully:

Alpha team: Defend the northern energy nodes

Beta team: Evacuate civilians and manage crowd flow

Gamma team: Intercept infiltrating units

Delta team: Stabilize terrain and prevent structural collapse

Orders were precise, but flexible. Cadets adapted in real-time to unexpected hazards. Von-Ra moved among sectors, giving micro-adjustments:

"Shift two cadets to the southern flank; Delta, prioritize the collapsing bridge over the eastern barrier. Watch the timing of enemy drones—they strike every 2.4 seconds, anticipate the pattern."

The squad executed flawlessly, each cadet's actions complementing another. Von-Ra's ability to see the battlefield as a system, not isolated threats, gave them an edge.

Koryn's squad faced the same scenario. They initially faltered due to overconfidence and split-second miscalculations. Koryn observed Von-Ra's efficiency and realized the difference: Not just strength or skill—strategy, timing, and trust in others matter most.

The simulation introduced a final elite rogue unit: a larger, faster, and unpredictable mechanical adversary. Von-Ra's squad engaged, but the unit adapted dynamically, forcing them to split focus.

Von-Ra instructed: "Gamma, distract the unit. Delta, flank left. I'll take the right approach to cut it off."

The battle was chaotic. Explosions, shifting terrain, and energy hazards demanded split-second decisions. Von-Ra moved like a conductor, orchestrating his team's actions with precision. Every maneuver was calculated; every cadet's skill amplified by his guidance.

Finally, Von-Ra executed a decisive move: using the rogue unit's own momentum against it, he directed it into a controlled energy trap, neutralizing the threat.

Koryn, observing, clenched his fists. He had adapted, had improved, but the difference in execution and foresight was undeniable. Yet he did not resent Von-Ra; instead, he vowed silently, I will be better. I will earn Father's approval and master this myself.

The simulations ended. Cadets were exhausted, yet exhilarated. Instructors debriefed:

"Von-Ra El demonstrates extraordinary mastery of observation, leadership, and strategy. Koryn Zod exhibits relentless determination and adaptability, showing remarkable growth under pressure. Both cadets are shaping the future of Krypton."

Von-Ra approached Koryn quietly. "You've improved significantly. Observation, timing, and adaptability—they complement each other. Keep refining all three."

Koryn nodded, a mixture of respect and determination. "I will. I won't just catch up—I will match your precision, one day."

Even Kara, quietly observing, absorbed every movement and decision, inspired by her older brother's skill and calm demeanor.

That night, Von-Ra reviewed the simulation logs alone. A subtle, almost imperceptible stirring within his body—a faint surge of energy at the edge of awareness—hinted at the Viltrumite gene awakening, still dormant but beginning its whisper.

Outside, Dru-Zod watched silently. Both boys, he knew, were forging themselves into leaders through rivalry, observation, and relentless determination—but neither could yet foresee how Von-Ra's latent power would alter Krypton's fate.

The Academy was no longer just a school. It was a forge for strategy, combat, and destiny, and Von-Ra was standing at the center, his mind sharp, his heart humane, and his future a spark waiting to ignite.
