Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Second chance

"Gosh! I never knew that my second day at work would be this disastrous! It's all because of that stupid Leah girl!" Nayeon complained to Haerin.

"Sorry to hear that, Nayeon. But it was your fault for trying to retaliate." Haerin said as she sipped her coffee loudly.

"Please, not coffee! You're already reminding me about my horrible afternoon!"

"You should go and beg for their forgiveness tomorrow morning."

"Why must I even show my face there again? I could simply get another job."

"Easier said than done, Nayeon. Do as I say, and he might give you a second chance. Besides, that job pays quite an adequate amount."

"Ughhhhhhh, I guess you're right."

"Oh, please. Have I ever been wrong?"

"Yes, you have!"

"Whatever. Anyway, when are you planning on visiting Minju and Ariyana?"

"I'm not."

"You don't wanna see your sister and niece? You used to live with them after all."

"I know that Minju is doing well and is providing for Ariyana. They have enough."

"What do you mean that they have enough? Minju works three shifts just to pay bills and still can't send Ariyana to school. She has to homeschool her whenever she is not working and Ariyana is always left at home alone when Minju is at work."

"Maybe if that foolish bastard that impregnated my sister hadn't run away as soon as he found out about her pregnancy, they could have had a better life."

"Perhaps, but no one knows where he is now."

There was a sudden knock on the door and Haerin sprang on her feet to go and answer it. A delivery guy gave her a package and she closed the door with her feet as she received it.

"What's that?" Nayeon asked curiously.

"Your early birthday gift. I couldn't get it another time if it wasn't from now." Haerin smiled warmly as she handed her the package.

Nayeon opened it anxiously.

"Valentino?" She read the name on the box and opened it. Inside was a gorgeous dark blue gown with golden sequences laced finely on it.

"So, do you like it?" Haerin asked.

"I love it, thanks. But how did you afford such a gown and from Valentino!?" Nayeon wandered.

"I had saved up."

Nayeon thanked Haerin again and went to keep the dress in her room.

The next day, Nayeon reluctantly went to the office and met Kyujin at the reception speaking with Vivian.

Kyujin noticed her instantly and smiled.

"Well, well. She's back. Mr Dohyun is waiting for you." Kyujin said as she chewed on gum.

"Waiting for me?" Nayeon repeated.

"Yeah, yeah." Kyujin said and gestured for her to go.

Vivian waved at her as she left.

Nayeon was practically trembling as she approached Dohyun's office. She took a deep breath and walked in.

There, Mr Dohyun was sitting smartly dressed in a brown suit and gestured for her to sit down on one of the chair in front of him.

The first thing she noticed was a brand new desktop and she thought to herself, "I guess Leah was right after all."

They sat in Silence for a while as Dohyun was concentrating on his work.

Then he suddenly asked her, "Do you want to continue working here?"

Nayeon was delighted by his question.

"Of course!" She replied.

While still working, Dohyun apologised to her.

"I'm sorry on behalf of Leah's stubborn behaviour yesterday. She is always like that."

Nayeon was flabbergasted that he was apologising to her instead she apologising to him.

"I-i'm sorry about yesterday aswell, Sir." Nayeon said timidly.

"It's fine. But may I ask what was in the coffee that you were so jumpy about her drinking it?"

"Uhhh..."

Nayeon quickly explained everything to him.

"I see. So I was stressing you?" Dohyun asked her. His deep brown eyes glittered which sent sparks through Nayeon's heart as she stared into them.

"I was frustrated, Sir." She said.

Dohyun smiled at her.

"I'm sorry about that. Are you alright?" He asked.

Nayeon's brain froze for a moment. She thought hardly to herself, "Why is he suddenly being so nice to me? Has he lost interest in Leah or is he playing me? Either one of my theories are right."

Dohyun chuckled.

"So I'm not firing you. I should not let Leah into my office anymore, so if she wants to see me, my secretary will tell me and I'll come out to do so." Dohyun said.

"Yes, that is better and thank you for giving me back my job, Sir." Nayeon said.

"Do you have anger issues?"

Nayeon was taken aback by the sudden question.

"What makes you think so, Sir?" She asked him anxiously.

"The way you put all that salt in my coffee expecting me to drink it. That is something I would have fired you for." Dohyun chuckled.

"It's called retaliation."

They both had a hearty laugh the Dohyun got an unexpected call and excused himself to take it. He continued his conversation with Nayeon as he finished.

"Ugh, Leah is so needy." Dohyun complained.

"Needy?" She asked.

"She wants me to send her money to go shopping."

"Hey, it's understandable. Girls need a lot of things."

"Like love?"

"What?"

"Don't worry... And i actually don't like her."

"Leah?"

"Yes, she is not my type but my parents force me to be with her."

"Oh..."

Nayeon thought, "Why is he openly telling me about Leah and all these things?"

"I won't keep you any longer, you can go back to work." Dohyun said.

"Thank you, Sir." Nayeon said.

"Oh, please, call me Dohyun."

"Okay, Dohyun."

Nayeon left his office with so many questions on her mind. What could he possibly want from her? She decided to put those thoughts aside and focus on herself.
