Chapter 24 - A Weekend Away

The weekend air was crisp and fresh, carrying the scent of rain-soaked grass and blooming flowers.

I stood by the front door, Ethan's hand firmly holding mine, and a sense of anticipation buzzed between us.

"So… this is really happening?" I asked, glancing at him.

Ethan grinned, that mischievous sparkle lighting up his eyes. "Yes. Just you, me, and a few days with no distractions. A proper getaway."

I felt my chest tighten. "I can't believe it… we're actually doing this."

He leaned down, brushing a soft kiss against my temple. "Believe it. And I promise, it'll be perfect. Just you and me."

The drive was filled with playful chatter, soft laughter, and the occasional comfortable silence. Ethan reached over occasionally to squeeze my hand or brush a loose strand of hair from my face. Each small gesture sent warmth through me.

We arrived at a small lakeside cabin by late afternoon. The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in gold and pink.

"It's beautiful," I whispered, stepping onto the porch.

"Not as beautiful as you," Ethan murmured, brushing his fingers along my waist.

My cheeks heated. "You're impossible," I muttered, though a smile tugged at my lips.

Inside, the cabin was cozy, the soft smell of pine and wood filling the space. A fireplace crackled softly, adding warmth to the room.

Ethan set our bags down, then turned to me, eyes gleaming. "This is our time, Lara. No work, no distractions, no one else. Just… us."

I nodded, feeling my heart swell. "I can't wait."

The evening passed with laughter, playful teasing, and soft touches. We made a simple dinner together, occasionally stealing kisses across the counter, and ended up curling up by the fire, sharing stories and secrets.

"You know," I murmured, resting my head on his chest, "I never imagined love could feel this… complete."

"Me neither," he whispered, brushing his fingers through my hair. "It's like… every moment with you makes everything else fade away."

Outside, the wind rustled through the trees, the lake reflecting the soft glow of the moon.

Ethan leaned closer, brushing a gentle kiss along my jawline. "I've been wanting to do this all day," he murmured.

I looked up at him, heart racing. "Do what?"

He smiled, eyes dark and intense. "Just… hold you close, Lara. Make sure you know how much you mean to me."

I felt a thrill run through me as he pulled me closer, resting his forehead against mine. His lips brushed softly against mine in a slow, teasing kiss.

"I love you," he whispered, voice low and full of emotion.

"I love you too," I murmured, heart pounding, wrapping my arms around him.

The night passed in soft intimacy, quiet whispers, and stolen moments of connection. Each touch, each word, each laugh made me fall even deeper for him.

The next morning, we woke to the sound of birds and the gentle lapping of the lake. Ethan made coffee, and we sat on the porch wrapped in blankets, sipping slowly and watching the mist rise from the water.

"You know," he said softly, "I could stay here forever with you. Just… like this."

I smiled, leaning my head against his shoulder. "Me too."

Later, we went for a walk along the lake, our hands entwined, laughter spilling with every playful splash in the shallow water.

At one point, Ethan spun me around, catching me off guard. "You're mine," he whispered softly.

I laughed, heart racing. "I'm yours," I replied, wrapping my arms around him.

The weekend was full of quiet adventures, soft touches, teasing glances, and whispered confessions. Each moment was a thread weaving our hearts closer together.

Even Maya called, checking in on us. "You two are unbearable," she teased, though her tone was softer now. "Just… make sure you come back in one piece."

Ethan chuckled, brushing a strand of hair from my face. "We're fine. And happy."

By the time we returned home, I realized something profound.

Despite all the teasing, tension, complications, and playful interruptions, we had built something real.

Something permanent.

Something that would last.

Ethan pulled me close, resting his chin on my head. "This… us… it's everything I've ever wanted."

I closed my eyes, heart full. "Me too."

And in that moment, I knew… this was the beginning of our forever.
