Chapter 25 - Facing the World Together

The sun had barely risen when I woke to the soft sound of birds and the faint hum of Ethan's voice from the kitchen.

I stretched, feeling the warmth of the bed still around me, and remembered our weekend getaway. The memories of laughter, stolen kisses, and quiet confessions made my heart flutter.

Sliding out of bed, I padded softly to the kitchen. Ethan was there, coffee mug in hand, humming a tune I recognized from our first days together.

"Morning," I whispered.

"Morning, beautiful," he said, turning with a grin that made my knees weak. "Sleep well?"

I nodded, trying to hide the blush creeping up my cheeks. "Better than I have in a long time."

He smiled, brushing a loose strand of hair behind my ear. "Good. Because today… we've got a lot to do."

I raised an eyebrow. "A lot?"

"Yes," he said, voice low and playful. "We need to face the world. Together."

I felt my chest tighten. "Together?"

He reached for my hand, holding it gently. "No more hiding. No more pretending. Just… us."

The morning passed in a flurry of preparation. We dressed, packed a small bag for Maya, and made sure everything was ready for a small gathering of friends and family.

"I'm nervous," I admitted as we drove to the event.

Ethan squeezed my hand. "Don't be. We've got this. And besides…" He leaned closer, brushing his lips against my cheek. "…you look incredible."

When we arrived, Maya was already there, arms crossed, pretending to be annoyed, but there was a soft smile on her lips.

"You two are impossible," she muttered.

"We're happy," Ethan said simply, taking my hand and intertwining our fingers.

Maya shook her head. "Fine. Just… make sure you don't break anything or anyone's heart along the way."

Inside, friends and family greeted us warmly. Their smiles and laughter made my chest swell with happiness.

Ethan stayed close, whispering little things in my ear, brushing his hand along my waist when no one was looking. Each small gesture made me feel safe and cherished.

At one point, we were cornered by Maya, who had that teasing smirk I'd come to recognize.

"You two really are unbearable," she said softly, though her tone was full of affection.

I laughed. "Maybe, but we're happy. Isn't that what matters?"

She shook her head, smiling. "Yeah… I guess it does."

Later, Ethan and I stole away to a quiet corner, the noise and chatter fading into the background.

"You know," he whispered, brushing a strand of hair from my face, "I could stay like this forever. Just… you and me."

I tilted my head, smiling softly. "Me too."

We shared a long, lingering kiss, letting the world fall away. Every worry, every fear, every doubt seemed insignificant when we were together.

As the day drew to a close, I realized something profound. Despite the teasing, the tension, and the slow burn of our relationship, we had built something real, lasting, and unshakable.

Ethan wrapped his arms around me, holding me close. "No matter what happens," he whispered, "we'll face it together. Always."

I rested my head against his chest, feeling his heartbeat steady and strong. "Always," I murmured.

Even Maya had joined us, her arm around my shoulder in a rare display of acceptance.

For the first time, I felt completely, undeniably safe, loved, and happy.

And I knew, deep in my heart, that this was the beginning of our forever.
