Chapter 4 - The War Against the Calamity

The destruction of the continent changed Ceres forever.

For thousands of years, the native races had believed that their kingdoms, their gods, and their ancient civilizations were permanent.

They were wrong.

An entire continent had disappeared beneath the ocean.

Mountains had been reduced to ruins.

Forests had been burned away.

Cities that had existed for thousands of years were gone.

And at the center of it all stood one human.

The Hero of Calamity.He said,

"Some heros save the world.

But I just ended what destroyed it."

He stood upon the remains of the battlefield and looked toward the horizon.

There was no celebration.

No smile.

No speech.

Behind him, thousands of humans had survived the battle.

For them, he was their savior.

For the remaining races, he was something else.

A monster.

The greatest threat Ceres had ever known.

The Demon King had survived the battle, but his forces had been devastated. Five of the Seven Demon Lords were already dead, and the demon race had lost an enormous portion of its military strength.

The remaining Demon Lords withdrew.

Other races followed.

The great alliance that had once seemed unstoppable was breaking apart.

The Hero of Calamity had won.

But victory had not satisfied him.

He looked toward the distant kingdoms.

There were still demons.

There were still rulers who had enslaved humans.

There were still armies that could threaten humanity.

To him, the war was unfinished.

His followers begged him to stop.

They told him humanity had been liberated.

They told him that thousands of slaves had been freed.

They told him that the remaining races were willing to negotiate.

The Hero of Calamity refused.

"Negotiation is impossible."

His words spread through the human forces.

Some did not understand.

Others were afraid to question him.

A representative from one of the neutral races eventually approached him.

They offered peace.

The representative promised that the race would recognize human independence.

They promised to abolish slavery.

They promised to withdraw from human territories.

The Hero of Calamity listened silently.

When the representative finished speaking, he turned away.

"Your cooperation is unnecessary."

The representative stared at him.

"Then what do you want?"

The Hero of Calamity answered without hesitation.

"Extinction."

The word traveled across Ceres.

The war had changed.

Until that moment, the native races had believed that the human was fighting for freedom.

Now they understood something far more frightening.

He wanted to eliminate every race that could threaten humanity.

The war of liberation had become a war of survival.

And so began the second great epoch of Ceres.

The Era of Survival.

---

Years passed.

Then decades.

Then centuries.

The Hero of Calamity did not age.

Human generations were born and died while he remained almost unchanged.

The people who had first witnessed his arrival became legends.

Their children became old.

Their grandchildren died.

Their descendants forgot the faces of the humans who had once been enslaved.

But the Hero of Calamity remained.

He continued his war.

Kingdom after kingdom fell before him.

The demons retreated deeper into their territories.

Elven kingdoms closed their borders.

Demi-human tribes abandoned ancient lands.

Monsters fled from regions where the Hero of Calamity was known to appear.

His name became enough to empty a city.

Parents frightened their children with stories about him.

"Be good, or the Calamity will come."

Children grew up believing that the Hero of Calamity was some ancient monster.

But among humans, the stories were different.

Some still worshipped him.

Some called him the Hero of Beginning, because his arrival had marked the beginning of humanity's rise.

Others called him the Hero of Death, because so many beings had died wherever he appeared.

But the name that survived above all others was the name given to him by his enemies.

The Hero of Calamity.

Nobody knew his true name.

Nobody dared to ask.

Perhaps even the humans closest to him had forgotten it.

He had become a title rather than a person.

A legend wearing human skin.

---

But the Hero of Calamity was not invincible.

At least, that was what the Divines eventually discovered.

For centuries, they had watched his progress.

At first, they had considered him a mortal problem.

The affairs of mortals were not their concern.

But the destruction continued.

The Hero of Calamity had killed Demon Lords.

He had destroyed kingdoms.

He had nearly annihilated the military power of the demon race.

And now his armies were approaching regions controlled by beings who had once considered themselves untouchable.

The Divines finally intervened.

Not because they cared about the suffering of the native races.

Not because they wanted to save humanity.

They intervened because the balance of Ceres was collapsing.

The Hero of Calamity had become too powerful.

The first Divine descended.

The battlefield fell silent.

Humans looked toward the sky.

The native races did the same.

For the first time in centuries, everyone saw something that the Hero of Calamity had never encountered before.

A being that stood above the mortal races.

A Divine.

The Divine did not speak.

The Hero of Calamity did not speak either.

They simply looked at one another.

Then the battle began.

It was unlike anything Ceres had ever witnessed.

Norvan Power erupted across the battlefield.

The Divine's power tore through the land.

The Hero of Calamity answered with power of his own.

Mountains shattered.

The sky burned.

The earth trembled.

For the first time, the Hero of Calamity was forced to fight an opponent who could withstand him.

The battle continued for days.

Neither side could defeat the other.

The Divine eventually withdrew.

The Hero of Calamity remained standing.

He had not won.

But he had survived.

And that was enough.

The Divines had learned something they had never expected.

The human could stand against them.

From that day onward, the Divines became cautious.

They no longer directly confronted him.

They watched.

They waited.

And they wondered whether the human would eventually come for them.

He did not.

Not yet.

---

The war continued.

The Hero of Calamity moved through the world like an unstoppable force.

His followers became fewer as the centuries passed.

Some died.

Some abandoned him.

Some became frightened by the scale of his war.

But he continued alone.

There were moments when humanity itself began to fear him.

After all, there were no human kings powerful enough to oppose him.

No human army could challenge him.

No human government could command him.

Humanity had gained freedom.

But it had also created a being no one could control.

The Hero of Calamity was humanity's greatest weapon.

And therefore, he was also humanity's greatest danger.

Yet nobody could stop him.

Anyone who tried was destroyed.

He never spared traitors.

He never forgave those who endangered humanity.

His reasoning was simple.

If humanity had finally been given a chance to survive, he would remove anything capable of taking that chance away.

Even if that meant destroying half the world.

---

Thousands of years passed.

The Era of Survival became a nightmare without an ending.

The demon race continued to fight.

The remaining races formed new alliances.

Some attempted diplomacy.

Others attempted assassination.

None succeeded.

The Hero of Calamity survived every attempt.

He became stronger.

His mastery of Norvana reached levels that even the ancient races struggled to understand.

Eventually, people stopped asking whether he could be defeated.

They began asking whether he could ever die.

Some believed he was immortal.

Others believed the Chasm had changed him.

There were even rumors that he was no longer human.

No one knew the truth.

But there was one thing everyone knew.

The Hero of Calamity would not stop.

Then, after thousands of years of war, something unexpected happened.

A new Chasm appeared.

The world had seen Chasms before.

But this one was different.

It opened quietly.

No great explosion accompanied it.

No strange creatures emerged.

No army appeared.

Instead, a single human stepped through.

He looked around.

Confusion filled his face.

He was younger than Kael Gorjer had been when he first arrived.

And unlike the first hero, he possessed no overwhelming physical strength.

He could not destroy armies.

He could not defeat Demon Lords.

He could not manipulate Norvana at a level comparable to the Calamity.

By the standards of the world, he was almost ordinary.

But he possessed something far more dangerous.

A power that did not attack the body.

It attacked the mind.

It attacked memory itself.

The second hero named Ryan Mackvile had arrived.

History would remember him as the Hero of Memories.

And for the first time in thousands of years, the Hero of Calamity would meet an enemy who did not need to overpower him.

He only needed to change what the Calamity remembered.

---

Nobody knows exactly how the Hero of Memories discovered the Hero of Calamity.

Some records claim he searched for him deliberately.

Others suggest that the Chasm itself brought them together.

The truth disappeared with them.

What is known is that the second hero began traveling through Ceres.

Ryan didm't immediately challange Kael.

Instead, he watched.

He studied people.

He learned their memories.

And he discovered the terrifying potential of his power.

Memory manipulation.

A person's memories were not simply records of the past.

They were the foundation of identity.

Memories determined who someone loved.

Who they hated.

Who they trusted.

What they feared.

What they believed.

If those memories could be changed, then the person could be changed without ever touching their body.

Imagine an enemy who had spent his entire life trying to kill you.

Then imagine entering his memories.

Removing every memory of hatred.

Replacing them with memories of friendship.

The enemy would still look at you.

He would still know your face.

But his feelings would be different.

He would no longer see an enemy.

He would see someone he trusted.

Someone he loved.

Someone worth protecting.

The Hero of Memories possessed that power.

And eventually, he found the one person whose mind had become almost as legendary as his strength.

The Hero of Calamity.

The two heroes met somewhere no historian could identify.

There was no army.

No battlefield.

No kingdom watching.

Only two humans who had arrived through the Chasm at different points in history.

One represented overwhelming power.

The other represented control over memory.

For the first time in thousands of years, the Hero of Calamity faced something he could not simply destroy with force.

Their battle began.

And then history became uncertain.

There are no reliable records of what happened next.

Some ancient texts claim the Hero of Calamity was defeated.

Others claim the Hero of Memories sacrificed himself.

Some say the two heroes fought until their powers destroyed each other.

And some believe neither of them truly died.

The only certainty is this:

Both heroes disappeared.

The Hero of Calamity vanished.

The Hero of Memories vanished.

And neither was ever seen again.

The war that had consumed Ceres for thousands of years suddenly stopped.

The remaining races were exhausted.

Humanity was exhausted.

The Divines watched the empty battlefield.

For the first time in generations, there was silence.

No Calamity.

No Memories.

No unstoppable human warrior.

But peace did not come.

Instead, something much more dangerous emerged.

A world without its two greatest weapons.

Humanity had survived.

The native races had survived.

And both sides were now weakened.

For the first time, humans possessed enough strength to stand on their own.

They had learned Norvana.

They had built kingdoms.

They had created armies.

They had begun to develop their own civilization.

But the other races had not forgotten the centuries of bloodshed.

They remembered the humans.

And when they realized that the monster they feared most was gone, they began to gather their forces again.

The age of survival was over.

A new conflict was coming.

An age in which no single hero would dominate the battlefield.

An age in which humanity would have to fight for its future with its own hands.

An age that history would eventually call—

The Era of Chaos.
