Chapter 5 - The Era of Chaos

For the first time in thousands of years, Ceres was silent.

The Hero of Calamity was gone.

So was the Hero of Memories.

No one knew whether either of them was dead.

No body had ever been found.

No grave had ever been built.

No final battle had ever been recorded with certainty.

They had simply disappeared.

And the world did not know how to respond.

For generations, the existence of the Hero of Calamity had shaped everything.

Kingdoms had risen because of him.

Kingdoms had fallen because of him.

Wars had begun because of him.

Wars had ended because of him.

Even those who hated humanity had spent centuries preparing for the day he might appear on their battlefield.

Now, there was nothing.

No overwhelming presence.

No unstoppable warrior.

No mysterious man walking alone through armies.

Only silence.

For a short time, that silence felt like peace.

Then the first kingdom attacked.

---

The survivors of the old races had spent thousands of years fearing humanity.

They've remembered what the Hero of Calamity had done to their kingdoms.

They remembered the destruction of the demon race.

They remembered the continent that had disappeared beneath the ocean.

They remembered the millions who had died.

And above all, they remembered the reason for it.

Humanity.

When the news spread that the Hero of Calamity had vanished, the old fear slowly became anger.

The native races believed their opportunity had finally arrived.

The demon race was still severely weakened.

The elves had lost much of their territory.

The demi-human tribes had been scattered.

Monsters that once ruled vast regions had been driven into remote lands.

But none of them had been completely destroyed.

And they had not forgotten.

They began to gather.

At first, the attacks were small.

A human settlement would be raided.

A village would disappear.

A trading route would be attacked.

A border fortress would be surrounded.

The human kingdoms responded.

But unlike the age of the Hero of Calamity, humanity was no longer helpless.

Thousands of years had changed them.

Humans had learned to use Norvana.

They had studied the mysterious power of Ceres.

They had developed their own techniques.

They had created schools of Norvana.

They had trained warriors.

They had built armies.

They had established kingdoms.

The descendants of slaves had become rulers.

The people who once lived in chains now stood behind walls of their own.

Humanity had finally become a civilization.

But it was still young.

And it had never fought a war without the Hero of Calamity.

That was about to change.

---

The first major battle of the new age occurred near the northern border of the human territories.

A large force of demons crossed the border.

Their commanders expected to find frightened humans.

Instead, they found an army.

Thousands of human soldiers stood behind defensive walls.

Norvana users stood among them.

Archers filled the towers.

Infantry waited behind shields.

For the first time, humanity had organized itself into a military force capable of standing against the native races.

The demon commander looked across the battlefield.

Then he laughed.

"You think numbers can replace your Calamity?"

The human commander answered:

"We don't need him."

The battle began.

The demons charged.

The human army held its ground.

Norvana erupted across the battlefield.

For hours, both sides fought.

Neither gained a decisive advantage.

Eventually, the demons withdrew.

The humans had won.

But it was not a glorious victory.

Thousands were dead.

The battlefield was covered with bodies.

Human soldiers who had never fought a real war before were forced to confront the reality of what their ancestors had endured for thousands of years.

They had won.

But they had paid for it with blood.

And that became the pattern of the new age.

Humanity could fight.

The other races could fight.

Neither side could completely destroy the other.

---

The conflict spread across Ceres.

Human kingdoms attacked demon territories.

Demon armies attacked human settlements.

Elven forces attempted to reclaim forests that had once belonged to them.

Demi-human tribes fought for lands that had been taken during the previous wars.

Monsters emerged from their territories and attacked both sides.

There was no single battlefield.

There was no single enemy.

There was no single hero.

Every kingdom fought its own war.

Every race had its own interests.

And every victory created another reason for revenge.

The world became trapped in an endless cycle.

Attack.

Retaliation.

Revenge.

Another attack.

The Divines watched.

They could have intervened.

They had enough power to end most of the conflicts.

But they did not.

The memory of the Hero of Calamity still haunted them.

They did not know whether he was truly dead.

And they feared that interfering too deeply in the mortal world might somehow bring him back.

So the Divines remained distant.

They watched humanity and the other races destroy one another.

The war continued.

Ten years.

A hundred years.

Five hundred years.

The conflict showed no sign of ending.

Eventually, historians gave the age a name.

The Era of Chaos.

---

Despite the constant wars, humanity continued to develop.

This was perhaps the greatest difference between the Era of Chaos and the previous age.

Humanity was no longer merely surviving.

It was growing.

Cities were built.

Kingdoms expanded.

Trade routes connected distant territories.

Schools were established.

Norvana became a field of study.

Humans who possessed natural talent were trained from childhood.

The power that had once belonged almost exclusively to the native races became part of human civilization.

Children learned basic Norvana techniques.

Warriors developed combat techniques.

Scholars studied its properties.

Researchers attempted to understand its connection to the world.

Some humans even began to believe that humanity had finally become a native power of Ceres.

But the older races disagreed.

To them, humans were still outsiders.

Foreigners.

Intruders.

And every time humans expanded into new territories, the old hatred returned.

---

The demons were especially determined.

The memory of the Hero of Calamity had become almost sacred among them.

To the younger generation, he was a nightmare from history.

To the older generation, he was the destroyer of their civilization.

The remaining Demon Lords taught their descendants stories of the Calamity.

They told them how one human had killed their ancestors.

How five Demon Lords had fallen.

How half of the demon military had been destroyed.

How an entire continent had vanished.

And how their greatest enemy had disappeared without ever being defeated.

For generations, the demons waited.

They wanted revenge.

But revenge was not enough.

They wanted humanity destroyed before another Hero emerged from the Chasm.

That fear shaped their strategy.

They attacked human settlements whenever they could.

They targeted Norvana academies.

They assassinated human commanders.

They destroyed villages.

They attempted to weaken humanity before it could become too powerful.

Humanity responded in the same way.

The war became increasingly brutal.

---

Yet something strange began to happen.

Humans were winning some wars.

The native races were winning others.

But neither side could achieve a final victory.

The human population continued to grow.

Their armies became larger.

Their Norvana users became stronger.

Their kingdoms became more organized.

The other races, however, still possessed advantages of their own.

Some had lived for centuries.

Some possessed ancient knowledge.

Some had natural abilities humans could not reproduce.

And some had powerful bloodlines that had existed since before humanity's arrival.

The balance remained.

A fragile balance.

One wrong move could destroy it.

For nearly a thousand years, Ceres existed in this state.

No great hero appeared.

No single ruler conquered the world.

No race completely destroyed another.

The war simply continued.

And humanity slowly became accustomed to it.

Children were born into war.

They grew up learning how to fight.

They became soldiers.

Their children became soldiers.

The memory of slavery faded.

The memory of the Hero of Calamity became legend.

For most humans, he was no longer a person.

He was a story.

A mythical figure who had once saved their ancestors.

But some humans still believed he was alive.

They believed that somewhere beyond the known lands, the Hero of Calamity was waiting.

Watching.

Waiting for the moment when humanity needed him again.

Others believed that the Hero of Memories had defeated him.

Still others believed that both heroes were trapped somewhere beyond the world.

No one knew.

The Divines did not answer.

---

Then, after nearly a thousand years of chaos, another Chasm appeared.

This time, the world noticed.

The Chasm opened above an ancient battlefield.

Its appearance was different from the previous ones.

The sky twisted.

The clouds disappeared.

Norvana surged through the atmosphere.

Every powerful Norvana user in the surrounding region felt it.

Something was coming.

Human soldiers gathered around the phenomenon.

The native races watched from a distance.

Everyone remembered the stories.

A Chasm meant one thing.

A human might appear.

The humans hoped for another savior.

The demons feared another Calamity.

The Divines watched carefully.

Then someone stepped through.

It was a woman.

She looked ordinary.

There was no overwhelming aura around her.

No immense power shook the earth.

She carried no legendary weapon.

She did not possess the terrifying strength of the Hero of Calamity.

At first, the soldiers were disappointed.

They had expected another monster.

Another unstoppable hero.

Instead, they saw a human woman standing alone beneath the strange light of the Chasm.

But they did not understand what they were looking at.

Because the third hero to emerge from the Chasm possessed something different.

She was not the strongest warrior.

She was not the greatest Norvana user.

She was not capable of destroying an army alone.

But when she stood among soldiers, something changed.

People became stronger.

More confident.

More coordinated.

Their movements became sharper.

Their fear disappeared.

Their determination grew.

And when she commanded them—

she could not lose.

The woman looked across the battlefield.

Then she turned toward the human soldiers.

"Who are you?"

one soldier asked.

She looked at him.

"I'm Lena Redine, a human."

The soldier stared.

"Where did you come from?"

She glanced back at the Chasm.

"From far away."

Then she looked toward the distant enemy forces.

"Lets see what I can do."

The soldier swallowed.

"What?"

She raised her sword.

"I enjoy war."

Her name would eventually disappear beneath her title.

History would remember her as the Hero of War.

And unlike the Hero of Calamity, she would not fight alone.

She would give humanity something the first hero never had.

An army.

A united army.

And under her command, the Era of Chaos was approaching its final battle.
