Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: A Gathering of Talents

It turned out the answer to evolution had been right beside him all along; Wesker felt like he was about to explode with rage.

If he could find the secret of Jill Valentine's successful fusion with the T-Virus, combined with the commonality of Sergei also perfectly fusing with it, he might actually find the key to triggering the evolution of all mankind.

Jill's secret must not be known by anyone, especially the Umbrella Corporation.

Wesker pondered his next move. He hadn't had the chance to betray the Umbrella Corporation yet, nor had he obtained the most crucial B.O.W. combat data.

Since the Arklay Laboratory was already under lockdown, he might as well test the B.O.W. experimental data there.

For the testing team, Wesker decisively chose the U.B.C.S. squad about to be stationed in Raccoon City.

No way Wesker would dare choose the S.T.A.R.S. team now; Jill's secret couldn't be discovered by the Umbrella Corporation.

The U.B.C.S. was composed of veterans, death row inmates, and outlaws recruited by the Umbrella Corporation. On the surface, they were a biohazard countermeasure service responsible for rescuing survivors and neutralizing out-of-control B.O.W.s, but in reality, when testing B.O.W. experimental data, the Umbrella Corporation didn't mind using the U.B.C.S. as test subjects.

...

"Curtis, you need to be more serious. Stop teasing Bella."

Ennerdale Street, an old-fashioned street-side cafe.

Asa sat in his chair, enjoying some leisurely time babysitting, when a family of three walked through the main entrance of the hall.

The man with long brown hair was dressed in a suit, and his wife wore a pink dress with white accents, exuding gentleness.

Between them was a young girl about the same age as Sherry Birkin.

"Mr. Miller."

The cafe waiter greeted the suited man familiarly.

Curtis?

Raccoon City was full of hidden talents; any random passerby could have a significant background.

A character from the spin-off animations, the boss of the first animated movie.

Strictly speaking, it was the second one, but after checking the Umbrella Corporation's records, Asa found no Dr. Cameron, nor anyone similar.

That's good; the most sinister one was banned.

Asa couldn't remember Curtis's story clearly, only that there was a very beautiful younger sister in the animation who, after a battle with Leon, also fell for 'Leon the Parted Hair.'

It couldn't be helped; his popularity was just that high. One could tell by how Leon was the protagonist of almost every spin-off animation.

Back to the point, he wasn't sure if Curtis's sister counted as an important plot character.

There were many female plot characters in resident evil, and naturally, many rewards. Asa felt a sort of happy dilemma.

Holding Sherry Birkin's hand, Asa led her out of the cafe.

"Sherry, where do you want to go play next?"

It was meant to be a kind inquiry, but upon hearing Asa question, Sherry's little face fell.

She asked tentatively:

"Let's go play by the river."

"Alright, let's go find Mrs. Kendo and have her take you."

Asa readily agreed.

Sherry huffed. It was like this every time; as soon as Asa asked, he'd immediately dump her onto Emma Kendo's parents. Although playing with Emma Kendo was fun, Sherry wanted to stay with her brother more.

As long as her brother was watching over her, she felt an inexplicable sense of security.

Though reluctant, Sherry was a sensible girl. She knew adults had their own business and didn't cling to Asa too much.

Arriving at the gun shop on the east side of the police station, Robert Kendo was looking after the store.

Robert was an honest and sincere man, well-trusted by the neighbors. Furthermore, as his shop was a place the police frequented, he was well-acquainted with them too.

Emma Kendo's mother, Mrs. Kendo, was also a warm-hearted woman. Asa felt very relieved entrusting Sherry Birkin to them temporarily.

"Jill is looking for you, Shen."

The moment Robert Kendo saw Asa, his face filled with a gossiping look.

"You've got some skills, kid. How did you land the most beautiful woman in the precinct?"

"Land her? How come I didn't know about that?"

A man's innocence concerns his reputation. Asa felt it necessary to clarify; he and Jill Valentine were strictly comrades-in-arms, at most having shared a hug during their last farewell.

"Stop playing dumb. I've never seen Jill look that anxious. You'd better get in touch with her."

Robert Kendo winked suggestively.

"I will, I will."

Asa hadn't stood Jill Valentine up on purpose; he was just too invested in researching T-Hope and T-Evolution to take the initiative to find her.

They had left in a hurry last time and hadn't exchanged contact information, which was indeed inconvenient. Asa had come today specifically to resolve this.

"By the way."

As if remembering something, Asa took out five light pink reagents from his backpack—actually from his system space.

"What's this? A new drink?"

"Hope Reagent. It can save your life at a critical moment."

Robert Kendo had helped Asa a lot over the past few months, including putting him in touch with Jill Valentine. Naturally, Asa wouldn't stand by and watch Emma Kendo and Mrs. Kendo fall into the situation they faced in the original game.

Isn't making up for regrets exactly what a transmigrator should do?

Five reagents were enough to save them twice.

"Actually, the murders from a few days ago were the Umbrella Corporation's..."

To prevent the Kendos from actually drinking the Hope Reagent like sugar water, Asa had no choice but to reveal some inside information to Robert Kendo.

Whether Robert believed it or not, when one is truly backed into a corner, they won't pass up any chance.

Of course, it would be better if the Raccoon City crisis didn't break out at all, though that seemed unlikely at the moment.

After bidding farewell to a reluctant Sherry Birkin, Asa arrived at the police station.

The Raccoon City Police Department was located between the old-fashioned cafe on Ennerdale Street and Kendo's Gun Shop; after a walk of only a few hundred meters, Asa arrived at the main entrance of the police station.

The police station, which once served as a two-story duplex museum, had a classical beauty when viewed from the outside.

Standing at the entrance of the police station, a fragrant breeze suddenly wafted past Asa. A short-haired girl was holding a map, muttering to herself at the entrance.

"It should be here, 114 Ennerdale Street..."

The voice was crisp and pleasant, and with that distinct baby face, the newcomer's identity was obvious.

[Discovered important plot character 'Rebecca Chambers.' Establishing a bond can earn rewards.]

It really is you.

Seeing Asa standing at the police station entrance as if waiting for her, Rebecca Chambers clearly misunderstood something.

"Hello, are you also a new recruit reporting for duty? I'm Rebecca Chambers."

Rebecca had her signature short hair, a small and soft face, and clear eyes. Even when she wore a serious expression, she had a natural air of innocence. Combined with her straight nose and full lips, her whole being radiated youthful and lively charm.

Standing before Asa, he felt the gloominess from his long stay in the underground base vanish instantly.

Is this the scent of youth?

Rebecca was 18 years old, the same age as Asa. However, she had just stepped out of school. She had unfortunately missed the events of resident evil 0, hadn't witnessed the Umbrella Corporation's evil experiments, and hadn't felt the pain of watching her teammates die one by one while being powerless to help. She was full of anticipation for her future life as a police officer.
