"Over here Eva" Liora called out to her. Eva looked her direction and went ahead to sit at the table. She sighed softly and looked at Liora and then the other girls who were with her earlier. "So, Eva, tell us a bit about you" one of the girls spoke.
"There is nothing much to say, just got transferred to the school" Eva said with a sly smile, turning to her food.
"Pretty boring life you got there…" one of the girls said mockingly while the girls giggled. Eva sighed "I couldn't agree more" before putting a full spoon in her mouth.
The girl looked at her, clearly annoyed. She rolled her eyes and turned to the other girls, making fun of people for one reason or the other, or as they called it, fun. They mocked other for their dressing or just mocking them for anything they had that wasn't expensive.
Eva listened but didn't say a word when she was done she picked her tray and left, muttering to herself "So this is what you lowlifes do for fun… and here I was thinking you had taste"
Eva walked back to her class before any other students when she opened a her book, she something written inside "Eva, don't eat the last plate of food on the dinning at night".
Eva stared at the note, perplexed and taken aback. She wondered who could have wrote it or was someone playing a prank on her so soon? She tore the sheet of paper out and threw it away. "what a dumb prank" she thought to herself.
She got home and everything continued as usual but her mom came home late which meant no dinner.
Eva woke up late in the night. She got out of bed, feeling groggy and her mouth parched. She came down to grab some water. She came down the stairs, zoning in and out of sleep, just to see a plate of food in the middle of the dinning table. Her sleepiness vanished, her parched mouth drooled with saliva and her stomach rumbled. She was starving. She steeped forward. The world around her had vanished. She was like a sailor, smitten by the song and beauty of a siren. Her hand had almost grasped the spoon when she remembered the words that were written in her book.
For a moment, she froze but her stomach was, at this point, louder than any voice in her head. She grabbed the chair and say down to eat but before she could, her mom stepped out of the kitchen with a spoon and sat down to eat. "so, it was her food" Eva reasoned before grabbing her water from the fridge and headed back to her room.
The next day, she was woken up by a noise down stairs. when she got down she noticed her mom was being rushed to the hospital. She was shocked and surprised, what?, how?, she had so many questions racing through her mind.
Frederick said she couldn't head to the hospital directly and that Eva had to go to school first. Eva didn't like idea but she had to comply. She was worried for her mom the whole day. All she could think about was how she watched her mother in pain, the only sign of life she had was her faint breathing. Sure, Eva and her mother may not have had the best mother-daughter relationship. Even though they had a terrible relationship, she is almost all she has and she won't like to see her hurt.
Immediately after school, she didn't wait for Fredrick to pick them up or the bus. she picked up her bag and walked in a rush to the hospital. Before the time, her mom would sometimes pick Luke and his little sister up from school and tell her to walk home, she knew her way around.
She walked to the hospital. She made her way to the reception in and asked to see her mom, she tried using her father's last name but there was no one name amongst the names in the records of patients in the hospital, Eva just sighed and called out Fredrick last name reluctantly. As expected she was there.
"She changed her last name to the man she wasn't even yet married to?" Eva mumbled "I'm already wondering what I'm doing here…". After confirming that she was indeed a family member, the nurse brought her to a room where are mom was been taking care of
She got to the door of the room, the nurse entered first and she followed. Seeing her mother lay there helplessly, she couldn't feel any pain or sadness. Somehow, her emotions failed her and all she could feel was nothing. The worry from earlier was gone… she felt… numb.
The nurse explained that she had been poisoned and the long time it took before 911 was called, made her situation worse. The poison had already found its way deep into her body. It was a long fought battle but she was fine now, though weak and still have some pain in most parts of her body, she'd be alright in a few weeks or so.
The nurse explained before she finally left the room leaving Eva and her unconscious mother. Eva let out a smirk
"Here you are laying on conscience beside the girl that you made her life a living nightmare. You know, I could do anything at anytime and you would just pass away smoothly… like nothing ever happened." Eva said has the thought passed by.
As soon as she spoke, a bright light flashed and when she opened her eyes, her eyes widened in shock. She saw something that looked like a gateway or portal that one'd only see in movies, appear in the middle of the room.
The portal glowed and a writing appeared. It was a question "Name?". She looked at it for a while "name?, what is this thing and why did it ask for her name?" Eva thought for a while.
She subconsciously said her name in her head and it appeared on the portal. Eva looked flabbergasted. It brought out the next question "age?" She felt a bit scared, not able to understand what was going on. Was she dreaming? Did she fall asleep in class and dream the rest of the day to this point? She looked at how the portal got her name down without her saying a word. Could it read her mind? Was it somehow connected to her?
She tried to test her theory and has expected the portal glowed out 17. Eva's eyes widened even more, her heart pounded in chest like it wanted out. Before she could react, the portal vanished.
Eva looked at the empty space where the portal appeared. A few minutes after the portal vanished, Fredrick entered, in a rush to the room with a needle in his hand. The moment he laid eyes on Eva her kept the needle behind his back.
"Eva?!" he said in shock "w-what are you doing here, you are supposed to be in school…"
Fredrick asked in shock and anger, Eva responded, wary of his awkward demeanor. "well, School was over a few hours ago. I wanted to check on her. I came here myself and why are you with a needle?" she asked, not beating around the bush.
Fredrick smiled, bringing out the needle he kept behind his back and waved it "Oh this, I saw one of the nurses who seemed to have an emergency situation with a comatose patient who seemed to be walking up on top of having to administer your mother's dosage of her medication. I offered to help " he said defending himself.
"So you are saying a nurse gave you a needle to give my mom?" Eva asked, "my wife, yes" Fredrick responded
Eva crossed her arms together "well, you can put the needle down. you are already two hours late to pick your kids and a nurse just came in a few minutes ago" she said giving a fierce gaze. "P.S., it's a violation of the medical policy to leave medication of patients to unauthorized personnel. So if what you're saying is true, the nurse is either very stupid or is just looking for a way to get her medical license revoked and her life ruined."
Fredrick backed off slowly with a smile, dropped the needle beside her mom and left, his fists clenched and his teeth gritted. As soon has he left she grabbed the needle and took out the drug inside and kept it in a small container in her bag. She filled the syringe with water and dropped it back where Fredrick had dropped it.
In a few seconds a man with a lab coat and a nose mask entered without saying a word took the needle and injected it in her mom and left without saying a word.
