Chapter 10 - Soul Rings (Part 2)

When the two brothers arrived at the academy gate at 6:40 a.m., Flander was already waiting. Without letting them bow, he grabbed them and began moving:"Enough formalities. You're not late. Now, another piece of advice: when entering a Soul Beast Forest, always go early, not late.

If it's already afternoon at the forest entrance, don't rush in — wait until tomorrow morning.

Since you two are Food-type and have no combat strength, I'll lead the way to save time."

Because Flander used his Soul Power to protect Aos Oscar and Aos Qin, they could open their eyes and observe, but his speed was so fast that they could hardly make out any details.

Once the travel pace stabilized, Aos Qin began circulating the Cloud Sea Technique to adjust his body.Running from Soto City to the academy that morning had been no small distance, and shortly after Aos Qin started, Aos Oscar sensed it and also began cultivating.

Flander's face briefly flickered with satisfaction. As a Sensitive-Attack Soul Saint, his speed was unmatched. Covering over a thousand kilometers, it would have taken the brothers at least a week to run on their own, factoring in necessary rest. Yet Flander, without even using his Martial Soul's flying ability, brought them to a small town at the entrance of Star Dou Forest by that afternoon.

He awoke the still-meditating brothers and booked two rooms in a small inn for the night, planning to enter the forest the next day.

As for supplies, the wise headmaster had already prepared everything. In his words:"Since I know we're going to Star Dou Forest, why would I shop in a small town? That's just asking to be scammed!"

Of course, he didn't buy food. With two Food-type Soul Masters and his own overwhelming ability, buying provisions at the forest's outskirts would have been overkill.

The brothers had long expected Flander's frugality. Not buying food was quirky but acceptable.

At dawn, the three set off. Flander let Aos Oscar and Aos Qin run on their own to warm up. By the time they reached the forest entrance, the morning mist had just lifted.

After a brief rest, they entered the dense jungle. At first, they followed a pre-cleared path, but after about half an hour, the forest thickened, branches crisscrossed everywhere, and no path remained.

Though Flander could easily clear the branches with a wave of his hand, he let the brothers experience it themselves.

Aos Qin drew his jungle knife to cut the way. A month of chopping practice allowed him to swing efficiently without losing balance. The blade's sharpness helped, though his speed inevitably slowed.

After an hour, Aos Oscar took over for the slightly fatigued Aos Qin. However, he was not as skilled with the jungle knife, slowing progress further.

Along the way, Aos Qin noticed several ten-year-old soul beasts. They did not provoke the group, perhaps sensing Flander's power. Flander did not kill them, instead using them as a teaching opportunity to explain soul beast knowledge.

"You should know: when a ten-year soul beast dies, it produces a white ten-year soul ring; a hundred-year soul beast yields a yellow ring; a thousand-year, purple; ten thousand-year, black; and a legendary hundred-thousand-year beast produces a red ring.

The color of a beast's Soul Power also follows this pattern — a simple way to gauge its age. When hunting, always observe Soul Power color; don't provoke beasts beyond your strength. Countless Soul Masters die this way each year.

Don't assume the forest outskirts are safe from high-age soul beasts.

Every Soul Master level has limits on the maximum age of soul rings they can absorb. Exceeding this limit risks body explosion. Before absorbing a ten-thousand-year ring, your body determines the maximum years it can take. This is why I emphasize physical conditioning.

Normally, the first soul ring should have a maximum age of around 420 years. After assessing you two, your physiques are excellent, so your first ring can approach that maximum."

For over two hours, the brothers alternated clearing the path. They encountered a few beasts, including a reckless hundred-year soul beast that tried to attack, but Flander casually swatted it away.

The most dangerous moment came when a ten-year bamboo viper coiled in the leaves. Unaware, Aos Oscar swung his knife, angering the snake. Aos Qin reacted, but too late.

Before Aos Qin could process the situation, the snake vanished — Flander had caught it. White Soul Power coalesced into a floating white soul ring above the viper's body.

Flander used this to teach:"In the jungle, never drop your guard. Danger lurks everywhere. Always watch and listen.

This white soul ring, if I could absorb it, would integrate into me by communicating with my Soul Power. But I am currently only 76th level — I cannot absorb it."

The ring floated back to its original position, set to dissipate if not absorbed within two hours.

"Rest a bit, drink some water. Now you'll experience acquiring a soul ring. The sooner we find one, the sooner we return."

Following the break, the brothers tidied the area, sprinkled their homemade insect-repelling powder, and sat on mats.

Star Dou Forest, straddling the Tian Dou and Xing Luo Empires, was the largest soul beast habitat on Douluo Continent. While not a tropical rainforest, the subtropical jungle still demanded high energy to navigate, especially for six-year-old Aos Qin, even with Soul Power assistance.

After sipping water, Aos Qin materialized a hamburger with his Soul Power and began eating. Only food could soothe his tired mind and body. He also prepared one for Flander and Aos Oscar; Aos Oscar contributed his sausage.

Half an hour later, Flander led them deeper, then moved laterally. About twenty minutes later, they stopped before a bamboo stalk rising among towering trees.

The bamboo, roughly the width of an adult forearm, was vibrant green — clearly a plant-type soul beast. Yellow Soul Power radiated, indicating a hundred-year-old beast.

Thanks to his Omnipotent Library, Aos Qin scanned it instantly:"Arrow Bamboo, height 3.84m; attack: bamboo leaf arrow rain; traits: extremely resilient and strong regenerative ability."

Flander explained:"This arrow bamboo is tough. Only destroying its roots kills it. It grows one centimeter per year; this one is nearly four meters — perfect age.

If you absorb its soul ring, you'll gain a healing-type soul skill. Who wants it first?"

Aos Qin realized this was likely Aos Oscar's first soul skill source and let him go first. Aos Oscar accepted without hesitation.

Without delay, Flander uprooted the bamboo, giving it no chance to attack. Aos Oscar infused his brother's soul-guided jungle knife with Soul Power, cutting the bamboo's root in one swing.

Though Aos Qin was surprised to see his Soul Guidance Weapon used this way, Flander said nothing, and Aos Qin relaxed.

After a few breaths, a yellow hundred-year soul ring appeared. With no blood present, Flander allowed Aos Oscar to absorb it on the spot.
