Chapter 11 - Soul Ring (Part 3)

Oscar sat cross-legged and, following Flander's instructions, focused his mind on his Martial Soul, using his soul power to communicate with the soul ring, thus beginning the first soul ring absorption of his life.

In Aos Qin's eyes, the scene appeared as follows: the soul ring produced by the arrow bamboo suddenly expanded as if it had received some command, wrapping around Oscar's body. Waves of yellow soul power surged continuously into him. Oscar's brows furrowed slightly, but his expression did not show any intense pain.

At the same time, Aos Qin realized that if he concentrated, he could faintly sense Oscar's physical condition.

After about ten minutes, the soul power fluctuations around Oscar's body stabilized. Seeing this, Flander nodded."Oscar should have no problem absorbing this soul ring."

Aos Qin also nodded; he could feel that Oscar's physical state was gradually improving.

After circling the area and sprinkling some medicinal powder, Aos Qin was about to enter meditation when he suddenly remembered something. Hesitating for a moment, he turned to Flander and asked,"Dean, as food-type soul masters, Oscar and I — if we have the chance to choose — should we focus on extreme speed and mobility while balancing a bit of combat ability, or should we pursue a defense-and-attack-oriented style that could rival battle-type soul masters while maintaining some speed?"

This question concerned Aos Qin's final learning choice within the Omnipotent Library, so he had to be cautious.

The first option was to learn movement or stealth techniques — good for escaping danger. However, unless he pursued the ultimate state of "walking through a field of flowers without a petal touching his body," once he used a speed-boosting Soul Guidance Device, Aos Qin's speed wouldn't be slower than a same-level agility-attack type.

The second option was to develop actual combat ability for self-defense. But unless he aimed to match the combat power of a genius-level battle soul master, being skilled in operating attack and defense Soul Guidance Devices would suffice.

In short, Aos Qin could reach an average level on his own, but by learning through the Omnipotent Library, he could become one of the strongest among his peers.

He only had one chance. With his current experience, he couldn't determine which path was best for his future, so even if it meant risking the exposure of some secrets, he needed advice from someone more experienced.

After all, he planned to equip those close to him with Soul Guidance Devices someday. And from his memories, though Flander was stingy and greedy, he was also upright and genuinely wished for his students' success.

Flander was momentarily stunned by Aos Qin's question. In his understanding, food-type and support-type soul masters couldn't possibly have battle-level combat power; when danger came, all they could do was run.

However, Flander quickly recovered. He was well-traveled across the continent and had extensive experience. Judging from the unusually powerful Soul Guidance Device — the Jungle Blade — and the current question, he could tell that Aos Qin possessed some unique knowledge.

He looked at Aos Qin meaningfully."You kid, it seems you've got a few cards hidden up your sleeve. But since you dared to ask me, I'll promise this — I won't covet what isn't mine. Not just me — none of the academy's teachers will. If you're willing to share and want advice from us, you can come anytime.

"As for your question, I'd choose the second path. After all, running depends on your opponent, but with combat strength, your fate is in your own hands."

Hearing that, Aos Qin no longer hesitated. Flander's sincerity also made him decide to reveal a little more. The Omnipotent Library itself was unspeakable, but Soul Guidance Devices could be mentioned — and perhaps Flander could even help him sell them for money later.

"It's like this, Dean," Aos Qin explained, "I accidentally learned the long-lost method of crafting Soul Guidance Devices. The Jungle Blade Oscar used earlier was made by me — it's a first-level melee attack-type Soul Guidance Device."

Seizing the moment, Aos Qin began to explain his ability in detail.

"Known Soul Guidance Devices are divided into nine levels, corresponding to soul masters from one ring to nine rings. I can currently only make first-level devices. Once I reach level fifteen, I should be able to attempt second-level ones. Their types are roughly divided into long-range attack, melee, defense, and support."

He handed the Jungle Blade to Flander and gestured,"Try channeling your soul power into it."

"Generally speaking," Aos Qin continued, "the higher the level of a Soul Guidance Device, the better the materials, the more complex the crafting, and the greater the power. But since Soul Guidance Devices are external tools, they're best for filling gaps, not as the main strength. To fully utilize them, one must train extensively to develop personalized usage patterns — so it's best to specialize in one type."

"My plan is to specialize in long-range attack-type Soul Guidance Devices. As a food-type soul master, my soul power consumption for skills is much lower than other types, and I can also support myself. So the heavy soul power usage of ranged weapons isn't a problem. If someone breaks through my ranged defense to attack me close up, specializing in melee wouldn't help much anyway."

Flander nodded slowly as he listened."Hmm, that's a good choice. From what you're saying, Soul Guidance Devices are indeed a way to compensate for the lack of attack power in food-type and support-type soul masters — and even for battle-type soul masters, they could cover weaknesses and amplify strengths.

"If they ever spread, they'll shake the entire soul master world. That's why I'm warning you — until you reach Soul Douluo or even Title Douluo level, never reveal the power of your Soul Guidance Devices to strangers. You can use them, but claim they were bought or found in ruins. And never relax your physical or soul power training because of them."

Hearing this, Aos Qin couldn't help but admire the dean's insight. After all, Soul Guidance Devices had once caused continental wars and forced the two great empires of the original Douluo Continent to flee overseas.

Aos Qin nodded."Don't worry, Dean. I know my limits. I also plan to teach Oscar how to make Soul Guidance Devices. The best weapon is always the one you make yourself. Before, I had no excuse for my knowledge, but now I can say I learned it from the academy's library — and I actually did find two books there about Soul Guidance Devices.

"When we return, I'll organize my knowledge to teach Oscar — and if any of the teachers want to learn, I'll share it too. As a commoner soul master, the academy is my greatest support."

Flander was quite satisfied."That's the right mindset. The academy won't let you suffer a loss. I'll also study a bit myself — more skills never hurt. And as long as you don't mass-produce high-level devices that threaten major powers, we can even sell some auxiliary ones like Storage Soul Guidance Devices or scouting types. With my Soul Saint level, I can protect my students unless we touch the giants' interests."

With that issue resolved, Aos Qin relaxed and entered meditation again. His soul ring had yet to be found — he had to stay in top condition.

Around noon, as Aos Qin and Flander were about to eat, a violent fluctuation of soul power came from Oscar's direction. Turning around, they saw that the yellow soul ring that had been radiating energy was now calm, floating gently around Oscar's body — the absorption was complete.

Oscar soon opened his eyes, stood up happily, and Aos Qin keenly noticed that his twin brother had grown taller — he even looked slightly older.

Before Flander could ask, Oscar ran over excitedly, saying,"Dean! I've finished absorbing it. My first soul skill is Restoration Sausage! It can restore soul power, stamina, and even minor injuries — plus it satisfies hunger.

"The soul power cost isn't high. With my current strength, I can make over a hundred. They last for one day, though their effects — except hunger recovery — are halved on me."

As he spoke, he summoned his Martial Soul, and the first soul ring shone brightly. With the embarrassing chant — "Your father's got a big sausage!" — a twenty-centimeter-long, two-finger-thick sausage appeared in his hand.

Hearing that incantation, both Aos Qin and Flander twitched their mouths, while Oscar looked awkward himself. Even knowing this scene from memory, seeing it in person was truly embarrassing for Aos Qin.

Thankfully, Flander had seen all kinds of things. He calmly took the sausage and bit into it. Aos Qin also ate one of the sausages Oscar had manifested again.

After eating, Aos Qin felt warmth spread through his body, the morning's fatigue completely disappearing.

"As expected," Flander commented after finishing, "your Martial Soul's quality didn't disappoint, and the soul ring's quality is excellent. This first soul skill's effect matches the second soul skill of most other food-type soul masters."

Once the excitement of becoming a soul master passed, Oscar remembered his younger brother still hadn't obtained a soul ring. Under the repeated sound of his… unique incantation, he quickly produced a pile of sausages, which, combined with Aos Qin's hamburgers, made their lunch.

After a short rest, Flander led the two to continue searching for a suitable soul beast.

As dusk approached and they were looking for a campsite, Flander spotted an ideal target — a Jade-Horned Deer returning to its dwelling after feeding.

This soul beast was an excellent runner, and Flander estimated its soul ring would provide a speed-enhancing ability. Judging from the jade-like antlers, it was about four hundred years old — the perfect range.

Once again, Flander subdued the soul beast, and Aos Qin activated his energy blade, thrusting it from under the deer's jaw straight into its brain, swiftly killing it.

At that moment, the three discovered that the deer's mouth was still holding a small humanoid ginseng-like creature — a Ginseng Doll of about sixty years of cultivation.
