I leaned against the bar, knocking back another shot that burned all the way down, the kind of burn that made me feel alive for a second before everything went numb again, and I was scanning the crowd, not really seeing faces, just bodies, alphas strutting around like they owned the place, omegas batting lashes, humans pretending they fit in, and me, just trying to drown out Mom's voice in my head about that stupid arranged marriage crap with some FBI prick who'd probably knot me and then lecture me on traffic laws or whatever the hell agents do.
This big alpha sauntered up, all smirks and cheap cologne mixed with that thick, musky pheromone stink that hit me like a slap, making my skin crawl, and he leaned in way too close, breath hot on my neck, saying, "Hey, pretty thing, you look like you need someone to take care of you tonight," and his hand was already on my arm, gripping a little too tight, like he thought I was gonna melt or some shit.
