Chapter 22 - Stolen Afternoons

The afternoon sun spilled gold across the backyard, highlighting the green of the grass and the soft shadows of the trees.

I sat on the swing, gently swaying back and forth, trying to look casual, though my heart was pounding.

Ethan stood nearby, tossing a small pebble into the fountain, watching me with that familiar grin that made my knees weak.

"You've been quiet all day," he said softly, walking toward me.

I glanced up, trying to appear nonchalant. "Just… thinking."

"About what?" His voice carried a teasing undertone, and I felt heat rise to my cheeks.

"You," I admitted, almost whispering.

His grin widened. "Me? All day?"

"Yes! And it's distracting," I said, cheeks burning.

He stepped closer, reaching for my hand. The simple touch made my stomach flutter.

"You like it," he murmured, brushing his thumb across the back of my hand.

I couldn't meet his gaze. "Maybe I do," I admitted softly.

"Good," he said, leaning closer, until our foreheads touched. "Because I like you… more than you can imagine."

My chest tightened. "Ethan…" I whispered.

He smiled softly, brushing a strand of hair from my face. "I can't stop thinking about you. About us. About… every moment we could have together."

I swallowed hard. "I think about us too… constantly."

We sat there for a long moment, letting the warmth of the sun and each other's presence fill the space.

"Want to go for a walk?" he asked suddenly, slipping his hand into mine.

I nodded, heart racing.

The park was quiet, only the sound of birds and distant laughter surrounding us. We walked hand in hand, teasing each other lightly, our fingers intertwined.

"You know," Ethan whispered, stopping suddenly and turning to face me, "I've never felt like this before. About anyone."

I tilted my head. "Neither have I."

He leaned closer, his lips brushing mine in a soft, teasing kiss.

I gasped lightly. "Ethan!"

He chuckled softly. "Relax. I'm not going anywhere."

We continued walking, pausing occasionally to steal kisses or share quiet words. Every touch, every glance, every playful smile made my heart race.

Later, we stopped at a small ice cream stand.

"Want to share?" he asked, holding out a double-scoop cone.

I nodded, and we shared the ice cream, laughing as he tried to sneak bites from mine.

"You're impossible!" I exclaimed, smearing a tiny bit on his cheek.

He laughed, wiping it off. "I love it. And you."

Hours passed like that—soft touches, playful teasing, whispered confessions, and laughter filling the space between us.

By the time we returned home, the sky was painted in hues of orange and pink.

Maya was on the porch, watching us with a knowing smile.

"You two are unbearable," she said, shaking her head, though I caught a hint of amusement in her voice.

Ethan winked at me. "We're just happy."

Maya sighed, walking inside. "I guess… I can't be mad at you two. But seriously, don't forget I exist."

"We won't," I called after her, smiling.

That evening, Ethan and I curled up on the couch, talking quietly, our fingers intertwined, and sharing soft kisses when no one was looking.

"You know," I whispered, resting my head on his chest, "I've never felt this happy before."

"Me neither," he murmured, brushing his fingers along my arm. "And I promise, I'll do everything I can to keep it that way."

For the first time, I felt completely at ease.

No pretending. No hiding. Just us.

And I realized, as I looked at him, heart swelling, that I was falling… hopelessly, irreversibly in love.
