Chapter 6 - Day Six

Survival Log for the world I have ended up in. For the record my Earth name is Ellery Kingston. My ID number is 888-3 for all Expeditionary Forces of Earth. As of July 18 of 2096 I have successfully entered a new world. As per the rules of the EFE I am writing daily logs based on my experiences and observations in this new world. With the introduction to my logs done I shall start.

Survival Log Day Six

I woke the next morning and packed my stuff. After a filling breakfast I went down to the carriage at the end of the road from the city. I payed 100 septims for a trip to winterhold. I knew that in the game the year was 4E 200 and that High King Torygg would be murdered some time soon and kick off the Skyrim civil war. Torygg had been killed by Ulfric using the voice. That was the extent of how much I knew of that so I'd need to got to the college to learn magics that could maybe protect him and push back the war some.

With the was starting slow it would give more time for Skyrim to recognize the dragon threat and perhaps help the Dragonborn. I also wanted to go to the college and hopefully learn the voice for myself. I didn't believe that only the greybeards knew it as some people would have at least heard and translated it at some points. I didn't want to go rooting around the dark and cold crypts of Skyrim so finding some translations would be the best choice.

I could remember that in order to use th voice you had to have a certain understanding of the words you were trying to use and needed to know how to use it. I new most of the shouts but not much else of the language. I remember it having something to do with kyne and being one of her 'children' or having her blessing. I'd likely have trouble with it because of that as I'm from earth and therefore not a being blessed by her.

On the way to winterhold I read my newer books. The first book was on conjuration and gave me summon dagger, sword, battle axe, and bow. After getting the dagger down the rest were easy enough except for bow as the arrow summoning was difficult. Conjure familiar was also easy and led to the flame atronach. I learned the second tier of the destruction elements next alongside the fire rune. The carriage driver was incredibly disturbed by me learning close wounds as I practiced it by stabbing my leg. Oakflesh was also disturbing for him as I attempted to do significant damage with a steel dagger. The only illusion spell I could find was clairvoyance and it didn't do much besides make the path ahead glow blue.

Close to the college I finally began the last book as it was on enchanting. I didn't have any more soul gems or anything to enchant so I was left to simply go through the theory. I knew from the game that a master enchanter could make an item with two powerful enchantments, and I could only imagine how powerful someone could be with every item they had being double enchanted.

When we finally got to the city it looked more like a snow covered town on a cliff rather than one of the holds. I fought my way through the snow up the road till I was close enough to the college to actually see it through the snow. It was a massive castle resting on a chunk of land with only a long stone bridge connecting it to the cliffside of the town.

I climbed the stairs while melting the snow and ice from the steps with weak flames. At the top was a stone shelter with the college's symbol on the floor and an elven mage sitting on a chair reading a book with some kind of ward protecting her from the cold. As I walked up she stood and faced me. I stood 6,1 in my armor but she had at least 6 inches on me so despite the short distance we were standing from each other she still towered over me. She was clad in armored robes of brown with what looked like ebony.

She looked down at me and spoke. "Why have you come to the College of Winterhold?"

"I want to learn magic. The college teaches magic and has a massive library for magic knowledge." I answered.

"Alright then, show me your best spell. If it's good enough then I'll let you in. Master Tolfdirs class is starting in a bit so hurry up if you want to make it."

I nodded then brought out my dagger. I rolled up my armorweave sleeve and plunged the blade through my arm. I then pulled it down drawing a massive cut through my arm. I set the dagger on the wall and with a bit of concentration cast close wounds. Then the massive cut sealed up nearly instantly and the pain cut off. I wiped away the blood and put my dagger away then looked up to her.

I could see that she was impressed by one of the two things I'd done but she wiped the look off her face and turned while speaking. "That was good enough. Follow me."

She led me up and across the bridge while lighting some magic well looking things. When we got to the large gate at the end of the bridge she waved a hand and spoke. "Master Wizard Mirabelle should be right over there at the tower entrance. She'll get you acquainted with the college grounds then will likely send you for master Tolfdirs class." I nodded to her and entered the grounds and found Mirabelle speaking with Tolfdir.

I waited till Tolfdir left and approached her. "Ma'am, miss Faralda told me to come to you for an introduction to the college."

She raised and eyebrow and asked "I suppose she gave you a test yes? What might it have been?" "She asked me to use my best spell. I used my close wounds spell to heal a self inflicted wound."

She looked at me like I was some kind of weirdo then spoke "Follow me then I show you art he college a bit." She then showed me to an empty room in the hall of attainment then showed me to the tower. Instead of like in game with only a few doors inside the building had four doors on the bottom floor and the large gate into the hall of elements. The first door on the right led to a large training hall where faralda held her classes on destruction magic and magical combat. The second door on the right led up to the Arcanaeum. The first door on the left was to another hall where the enchanting and potion classes were held.

The door beside it led to the second floor proper and up to the arch-mages room. The second floor led to a number of rooms that could be used for any purpose the user wanted. On the second floor was also access to the roof and outer walls. When the 'tour' was over she sent me into the hall of elements for Tolfdir's class. I didn't remember any of the people here besides the few memorable ones so I had no idea who my class mates were.

When I joined they were already discussing wards and their uses. I only knew the basic lesser ward so I simply pulled out my magic notes and started writing down everything Tolfdir said. Near the end of the class Tolfdir asked everyone to show him their wards. I was the last in the line to show him and the others hadn't met me so I got their attention. I showed my lesser ward and then brought up my enchanted shield. As it was technically magical it counted as a ward so I didn't see a problem with it. My peers looked a bit confused as I raised my shield as Tolfdir chuckled then spoke.

"An enchanted shield, likely with a resist magic enchant allowing it to protect against both blades and arrows, and magic. While a ward does block most attacks it relies on you to control and power it. An enchanted shield however can do the job with very little input. It can also act as a secondary defense against enemy magic."

"But master Tolfdir, don't we learn magic so we don't have to use stuff like that? Using a shield when we could use a ward is just redundant and ultimately useless." One of the boys of the group asked while raising his nose at me. I guess the idiot didn't listen to Tolfdir at all then. I toned out Tolfdir educating the idiots on basic stuff and began looking at the books Tolfdir had laid out on a table. I found stone flesh, iron flesh, water breathing, and even ebony flesh. I quickly copied down the three flesh spells and water breathing then began looking through the rest. I found a spell called buoyancy which allow one to walk on water, one that would lighten the weight of what you cast it on, and a shield spell called aegis. I even found a spell called fortify strength with what seemed to be Tolfdir's notes on using it to become incredibly strong and even using it to build actual muscle. I copied everything I could find till I was the only person left in the hall alongside Tolfdir.

"It's very rare for a student to go through all the books I set up during my classes." I looked over to him as he began speaking. "I think you'll find this one useful." He said as he pulled a book from a stack I hadn't gotten to. "Thank you sir, I only just joined today and haven't even set up my tuition properly, and I already have access to magic knowledge that would have taken me a lot of work to get outside this place."

The old man simply smiled and nodded at my words. "That's the purpose of this college. It was made to preserve our knowledge for the next generation for them to learn and add to. If a student wishes to learn here than we welcome them. I'd welcome you to read my notes in wards and such but I don't have them with me so that book will have to do."

"Thank you sir but I think I'd need to read through most of the Arcanaeum books before I could understand the writing of a master. Though I have to ask, where is the combat alteration and why is there so many references to transmute but no actual knowledge of how to do it? Where's the paralysis spells and the earth spikes. The additional body parts and gravity manipulation?"

He once again chuckled as I finished my questions and began answering "I'm afraid to say the bodily alteration is currently beyond you skills. Paralysis, earth spikes, and such are taught in magic combat classes where I sometimes join to help young faralda. Gravity manipulation has potential for massive damage so it is taught at higher levels. Finally transmute requires the learner to understand the responsibilities that come with being able to make iron to silver then to gold. Additionally transmute is much more complicated than many may believe as it isn't simply changing a material to another."

I took notes on what he said and when he finished I went to thank him. Before I could do so he interrupted. "It seems to have gotten quite late young man. You and I both need to get ourselves some dinner and rest. I foresee a long day for you tomorrow." At that he stood and left the hall while using magic to float the books he had brought behind him. That reminded me I had yet to find the telekinesis spell so I put that in my notes and left to grab some food and get some rest.

I got some food from a kitchen in the hall of attainment and hit the sack to write this log. I finish my day ready the book Tolfdir suggested to me.

Thus concludes my day six survival log for this world.
